An Unfriendly Town

City of Albany; "X" graffiti by Dave Lucas

Looking for a warm welcome in a new city? Don't come to Albany - that's the message from a new survey of the most and least friendly places on the planet.

46,000 readers of Conde Nast magazine participated in the publication's annual Reader Choice Survey, from which the list of Friendliest and Unfriendliest Cities In The World was compiled. Florianopolis, Brazil, ranked as the friendliest city. Stateside, Charleston, South Carolina, took the highest spot on the friendly list, coming in at number 5. Only 2 other American cities were deemed "friendly" at all - when it comes to UN friendly, Albany, New York is #7 of the least friendly among U.S. cities - Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings was not available for comment...   and you don't have to go far to find the UN friendliest city of all - it's Newark New Jersey.

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief. Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. Prior to that he hosted talk shows on WYJB and WROW, including the 1999 series of overnight radio broadcasts tracking the JonBenet Ramsey murder case with a cast of callers and characters from all over the world via the internet. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.
