Ulster County Executive Mike Hein has announced a new fire safety initiative.

Hein says the Ulster County Smoke Alarm Installation Initiative provides free installation of specialized Silent Call smoke detectors to families with children who are hard of hearing or deaf. Silent Call smoke detectors transmit a signal within a 100-foot radius, using vibration to alert the child in the event of smoke or a fire. The project is the result of a partnership between the county executive and the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, which has provided a limited number of the smoke detectors. Hein says he is committed to providing funding to ensure that families with children who need these detectors can receive them.
