The Troy City Council has decided to take a second look at the revised city charter that became effective on Friday:
Voters in 2015 passed a charter referendum that made a number of revisions to the previous amending of the charter in 1996.
City Council President Carmella Mantello says the council did a comparison of the old versus new charter "...and we found 18 or 19 substantial changes from the old charter to the new charter, and certainly, the voters passed this so we have no intention to change anything that the voters passed. However, there were glaring omissions, specifically for the legislative branch, whereby, right now, as of July 1st, when the charter took place, we have no attorney."
Mantello identifies another problem as there being no way to fill a vacancy should one of the city's three judges leave office. "Should those omissions be proposed to be put back in, then we would have to go through local law process. Three public hearings, and then actually pass the resolution."
The changes are scheduled to be discussed during a workshop and public meeting on the charter July 11th, 6pm at City Hall.
