In baseball, the Detroit Tigers built a big lead and held on this time, beating the Boston Red Sox 7-3 last night to even the AL championship series. A revitalized Austin Jackson delivered in manager Jim Leyland's revamped lineup. Detroit scored five runs off Jake Peavy in the pivotal second inning after Dustin Pedroia fumbled away his opportunity at an inning-ending double play.
Elsewhere, it got a little tight at the finish, but the Los Angeles Dodgers will certainly take it as they stay alive in the NL championship series.
Adrian Gonzalez homered twice and Zack Greinke gave the Dodgers the clutch pitching performance they needed in a 6-4 victory over St. Louis. That trimmed the Cardinals' lead to 3-2 in the NL championship series.
Checking the NHL, the NY Rangers ended a three-game losing streak blanking Washington 2-0. Henrik Lundqvist posted his 46th NHL shutout, Brad Richards assisted on two goals less than two minutes apart in the second period.
And Anaheim defeated Calgary 3-2.
In the NFL, Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel is expected to miss another four to six weeks now that he's begun rehabbing his sprained right knee.
In other sports news, the 13-member College Football Playoff selection committee was officially introduced. Among those serving on the committee are former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne and Hall of Fame quarterback Archie Manning.
In NBA preseason action, Toronto passed Boston 99-97. It was Dallas over Indiana 92-85. Chicago bested Detroit 96-81. Houston won against Orlando 108-104 and Utah fell to Portland 99-92.
Finally, the Women's Sports Foundation awarded 18-year-old Missy Franklin Sportswoman of the Year. Franklin won four gold medals and a bronze at the 2012 London Olympics.
