Thousands Expected For Women's Equality Rally In Boston

npr.org

Thousands are expected at a rally today in Boston co-hosted by more than 20 groups protesting the Supreme Court’s recent rulings on Massachusetts buffer zone law and the Hobby Lobby contraceptive debate. The so-called Supreme Rally for Women’s Equality starts at 5 o’clock at Boston’s City Hall Plaza.

The rally comes after the Supreme Court said Hobby Lobby and other businesses can use religious beliefs of ownership to avoid covering some or all contraceptives in employee health plans. Last month the Court also struck down the Massachusetts abortion clinic buffer zone law that barred protesters from coming within 35 feet of clinic entrances. Mike Lake, a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor,is one of many expected to attend.

“Our Supreme Court needs to rethink what it means to be an American and what it means to stand up for the individual rights and freedoms of people,” Lake said. “I can’t imagine more backwards decisions than we have seen recently from our Supreme Court.”

The anti-abortion group Massachusetts Citizens for Life sent a letter Tuesday warning state lawmakers that any new law could face another constitutional challenge.
