An upstate New York lawmaker is calling for a new way to fund school security in the wake of the shooting that killed 17 in Parkland, Florida.
Republican State Senator Jim Tedisco’s proposed “Guardians for Schools” license plate program is intended to improve safety by funding armed school resource officers, mental health counseling, metal detectors, active shooter and security training, and building modifications.
As part of the proposal, a dedicated state fund would be created using proceeds from purchases of a “Guardians for Schools” plate. The plan is being supported by sheriffs from Saratoga, Hamilton, and Fulton counties.
