SUNY New Paltz Cancels Classes, Mandates Students Leave Over Water Concerns

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says preliminary results indicate the Village of New Paltz’s water storage tanks have non-detectable levels of petroleum compounds. The Ulster County village issued a “do not drink advisory” earlier this week. 

More samples will be collected Thursday. SUNY New Paltz, which has about 8,000 undergraduates, has cancelled classes through Saturday and ordered residential students off campus. The state has sent more than 40,000 gallons of fresh water to the village.

Officials say the likely cause of the sheen on Reservoir Number 4 is a compromised underground fuel line for the village's water treatment plant heating system.
