Sullivan COVID Surge Prompts Caution Message From Health Official

COVID-19 was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and has now been detected in 37 locations across the globe, including in the U.S., according to the CDC.

Sullivan County’s health official is urging residents to continue to take precautions against COVID-19 — such as mask wearing and social distancing — whether they are vaccinated or not. This comes after a surge in local cases.

Sullivan Public Health Director Nancy McGraw says COVID cases in the county have gone from 142 at the beginning of March to 265 as of Thursday, an 86 percent increase. She says the uptick has been steady the past two weeks and that Sullivan is seeing about 30 positive cases a day. McGraw says nearly 28 percent of the local March cases are among those 24 years old or younger. She says the spread can be attributed to human behavior and gatherings and not specific places. McGraw says that with schools out for spring break next week and residents travelling to other states and elsewhere for vacation, she’s concerned this upward trend of active cases will continue.
