Despite the federal government’s partial shutdown, New York State is keeping the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island open for visitors.

Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the state will fully fund National Park Service personnel and operations costs at $65,000 per day.

New York State has kept the national parks open during previous shutdowns. The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island will remain open, weather permitting, with the exception of Christmas Day.

Governor Cuomo, who was re-elected in November, is planning to deliver his third inaugural address on Ellis Island on January 1st.
