In the midst of the pandemic, Springfield, Massachusetts will pause Monday to reflect on the anniversary of a natural disaster.
Mayor Domenic Sarno said the ninth anniversary of the June 1, 2011 tornado is a time to recall the ability of the people of Springfield to join together and make the city whole again.
"I will ask the houses of worship to please chime your bells and then a moment of reflection and silence at the exact time when the tornado hit, which I believe was 4:38 (pm)," Sarno said.
The tornado, which tracked through parts of Hampden and Worcester counties, killed 3 people, injured 300, left 500 homeless, and caused an estimated $140 million in property damage in Springfield.
