Springfield Designated As 'Urban Bird Treaty' City

Springfield, Massachusetts has been selected to participate in a federal conservation program for migratory birds.

The designation comes with a small amount of money from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to improve bird habitat in the city and develop educational programming.

Regreen Springfield, a nonprofit conservation organization, is leading the city’s participation in the Urban Bird Treaty program.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with the organization’s president Dave Bloniarz.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
