Advocates for tenants fear a spike in evictions will occur in Massachusetts once a federal moratorium ends on July 31st.

Since a statewide moratorium ended last October, more than 18,000 eviction cases have been filed.

Legislation has been introduced on Beacon Hill that would pause evictions and foreclosures to give tenants, homeowners, and small-scale landlords time to access the more than $400 million in housing assistance that is currently available in Massachusetts.

The Springfield City Council voted unanimously Monday night to approve a resolution supporting the state bill.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with City Councilor Jesse Lederman, the resolution’s lead sponsor.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
