City Councilors in Springfield, Massachusetts will attempt Monday to override a veto of an ordinance that prevents city officials from inquiring about a person’s immigration status.
Mayor Domenic Sarno said the “Welcoming Community Trust” ordinance would create financial and legal troubles by making Springfield a so-called sanctuary city for undocumented immigrants.
City Councilor Adam Gomez refutes the mayor’s claims.
"We have to honestly start putting ourselves on the side of fact and not fiction," said Gomez.
The City Council passed the ordinance by a 10-3 vote last month. It will take two-thirds, or 9 votes, of the 13-member council to override the mayor’s veto.
