Aaron Judge and Gio Urshela homered early as a makeshift New York Yankees lineup pounded David Price in a 7-4 victory that sent the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox to their eighth consecutive defeat.

With only three projected regulars in the batting order, the banged-up Yankees won their fifth straight and completed the first four-game sweep of their longtime rivals since August 2009.

Mets star Robinson Canó appears headed back to the injured list after straining his left hamstring, an injury that overshadowed Noah Syndergaard's sparkling outing in a 13-2 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates that pulled New York within one game of .500 for the first time since mid-June. Canó lined a hit to right in the fourth inning, his ninth hit in his last 15 at-bats. He pulled up after rounding first and grabbed at the back of his leg. Canó limped as he returned to the dugout.

Arizona prevented the Nationals from gaining ground by getting a tiebreaking, two-run single from Adam Jones in the seventh inning to give the Diamondbacks a 7-5 victory. Jones finished with four RBIs and Ketel Marte hit an inside-the-park solo homer that put the DBacks ahead, 4-2. Gerardo Parra and Brian Dozier homered for the Nats, who have dropped four of five.

The Phillies suffered a 10-5 loss to the White Sox as Leury Garcia belted a grand slam and Eloy Jiménez added a three-run shot. Tim Anderson also went deep for Chicago, which took two of three in Philadelphia after getting swept at home by the Mets. Losing pitcher Drew Smyly allowed five runs in the second inning, four of them on Garcia's 431-foot blast that landed just shy of the outfield concourse.

In MLB news, the New York Yankees have placed outfielder Aaron Hicks and designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion on the injured list. Hicks has been diagnosed with a flexor strain in his right elbow after the team initially thought he had a torn ligament that could require season-ending Tommy John surgery. Encarnacion broke his right wrist when he was hit by a pitch during Saturday's doubleheader sweep against Boston.

The Phillies have demoted third baseman Maikel Franco to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The Phillies made the surprising move Sunday with Franco hitting just .231 with 15 home runs and 47 RBIs in 102 games.

WNBA

Courtney Williams scored a season-high 28 points and the Connecticut Sun won their seventh consecutive game with a 94-79 victory over the New York Liberty. Alyssa Thomas added 16 points and Jonquel Jones had 14 points, 10 rebounds and five steals for the Sun (16-6).

TENNIS

Nick Kyrgios overcame a bothersome back and used two of his 18 aces to close things out with a two-tiebreaker victory over No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev in the Citi Open final. Kyrgios won his second title of the year.

Jessica Pegula won the first WTA title of her career with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Camila Giorgi at the Citi Open. Pegula is a 25-year-old American ranked 79th. Her parents own the NFL's Buffalo Bills and NHL's Buffalo Sabres. She had a 4-8 record and hadn't reached the quarterfinals anywhere this season until winning five consecutive matches at Washington's hard-court tournament. Pegula recently began working with Venus Williams' former coach.

GOLF

J.T. Poston has won the Wyndham Championship for his first PGA Tour title, shooting an 8-under 62 for a one-stroke victory over Webb Simpson. Poston tied Henrik Stenson's 2-year-old tournament record at 22-under 258. He became the first player since Lee Trevino in 1974 to win a 72-hole stroke-play event on tour without any bogeys or worse.

Japan’s Hinako Shibuno has wrapped up her stunning major championship debut by closing with a birdie to earn a one-shot win over American Lizette Salas at the Women’s British Open. The 20-year-old Japan LPGA Tour rookie birdied five of the final nine holes for a 4-under 68 and 18-under 270 overall. Jin Young Ko fell short in her bid for a third major title after winning the Evian Championship last week, finishing third following a 66.

NASCAR

Chase Elliott has earned his second straight victory at Watkins Glen, once again holding off Martin Truex Jr. to become the first repeat winner at The Glen since Marcos Ambrose in 2011-12. It was a two-car race for more than half the 220.5-mile distance and the entire final 40 laps. Elliott started from the pole and led 80 of 90 laps in snapping a long slump. Denny Hamlin was third, followed by Erik Jones and Ryan Blaney.

NFL

A person with knowledge of the deal confirms to The Associated Press that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is signing a two-year, $70 million contract extension. The person says the deal includes an $8 million bump in this year's salary to $23 million. Brady would make $30 million in 2020 and $32 million in 2021, when he'd be 44. Brady had never played out the final year of a contract in his 20-year NFL career.

Veteran wide receiver Jordy Nelson is retiring as a member of the Green Bay Packers. The 34-year-old Nelson played in Green Bay from 2008-2017, winning a Super Bowl with the team before spending last season with the Oakland Raiders. Nelson had 550 receptions and 69 touchdown catches in his 10 seasons in Green Bay. He made the Pro Bowl in 2014, missed the 2015 season with a knee injury and was named the 2016 Comeback Player of the Year. He played in 15 games for Oakland last year, finishing with 63 receptions for 739 yards and three TDs.
