Didi Gregorius drove in three more runs with two of New York's nine extra-base hits, and the Yankees clobbered Minnesota's pitching once again in a 10-7 win over the Twins.

Aaron Hicks, Gleyber Torres and Edwin Encarnación each hit solo home runs for the Yankees, who outscored the Twins 30-27 to take the three-game series and turned Target Field into a private batting cage with a total of 48 hits, half of them for extra bases. Eddie Rosario, Marwin Gonzalez and Nelson Cruz homered for the Twins.

Fernando Tatis Jr. got three hits and the San Diego Padres beat Noah Syndergaard and the New York Mets 7-2 for their third win in 11 games since the All-Star break. The Padres took advantage of two errors by left fielder Dominic Smith and sent the Mets to their fourth loss in five games. Dinelson Lamet made his fourth start since returning from Tommy John surgery, allowing two runs in four innings while striking out six.

Charlie Morton struck out 11 over seven innings and the Tampa Bay Rays avoided a three-game sweep by beating David Price and Boston 3-2 in a game that the Red Sox protested. Confusion reigned in the top of the eighth when a series of defensive changes involving reliever Adam Kolarek prompted Boston manager Alex Cora to protest the game due to the placement of subs into the Rays lineup after the designated hitter was removed.

Vince Velasquez pitched impressively into the sixth inning and the Phillies beat the Detroit Tigers 4-0 Wednesday to finish a quick two-game sweep. Bryce Harper sat out, but Philadelphia didn't need much offense.

The Washington Nationals took Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader by getting home runs from Adam Eaton and Anthony Rendon in a 3-2 decision over Colorado. Rendon’s seventh-inning blast broke a 2-2 deadlock and allowed the Nats to improve to 35-15 since May 24. Fernando Rodney escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth and Sean Doolittle closed it out for his 22nd save in 26 tries. The Nationals went on to take the nightcap, 2-0.

In MLB news, New York Yankees All-Star catcher Gary Sánchez has gone on the injured list for the second time this season, a day after straining his left groin. Sánchez was hurt when he stepped on first base while grounding out in the eighth inning of the Yankees' 14-12, 10-inning win over Minnesota on Tuesday night. Sánchez also was sidelined between April 10 and 24 because of a strained left calf. He was out for much of the second half last year with a strained right groin.

The Philadelphia Phillies have put Brad Miller on the 10-day injured list, less than 24 hours after he made a game-saving throw from left field against Detroit. The Phillies say Miller has a right hip flexor strain. Philadelphia beat Detroit 3-2 in 15 innings in a game that ended shortly after midnight. Miller threw Nicholas Castellanos out at the plate in the 14th to keep the game tied. Philadelphia activated Sean Rodriguez from the injured list.

WNBA

Jasmine Thomas had 18 points and seven assists, Courtney Williams added 13 points and eight rebounds and the Connecticut Sun beat the New York Liberty 70-63 for their fourth straight victory. Connecticut held New York scoreless for nearly the first five minutes of the second half, and the Liberty finished the quarter with just seven points.

In WNBA news, Allie Quigley of the Chicago Sky will try to three-peat as champion of the 3-point contest ahead of the WNBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas. Quigley set the WNBA record in Minnesota last year when she scored 29 points in the overtime round of the competition. Also competing in Friday's 3-point contest is Las Vegas' Kayla McBride, Los Angeles' Chelsea Gray, New York's Kia Nurse, Indiana's Erica Wheeler and Connecticut's Shekinna Stricklen.

NFL

The New York Jets have reported for training camp without top draft pick Quinnen Williams, who remains unsigned. The defensive lineman was the No. 3 overall selection in April out of Alabama. The sticking point appears to be the schedule of how Williams' signing bonus of about $21.7 million will be paid. The Jets hold their first camp practice Thursday.

Formers USC star and New York Jets first-round pick Mark Sanchez is retiring from the NFL and joining ESPN as a college football analyst. Sanchez played for Southern California from 2005-08, earning Rose Bowl MVP honors in his final college game. He was selected fifth overall in the 2009 NFL draft by the Jets and led them to the AFC championship game in each of his first two seasons. The 32-year-old also played for the Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins in a 10-year NFL career.

The New York Giants have received a commissioner's exemption for suspended defensive back Kamrin Moore. The Giants announced the move a little more than a week after suspending the safety amid charges he punched a woman, stepped on her neck and rendered her unconscious.

The Super Bowl champion New England Patriots are back at work, and things are already a lot quieter. Rob Gronkowski has retired, and the locker room is a more serious place without the fun-loving tight end who once declared himself the life of the party in garbled Spanish. The Patriots are looking for replacements at tight end, but the offense could also lean more on wide receivers or running backs to replace Gronk's production.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Former Boston College women's basketball coach Cathy Inglese died Wednesday, a week after sustaining a brain injury in a fall. She was 60. Inglese's family announced the death in a statement posted by sister Nancy Inglese on Facebook. Inglese coached at Boston College from 1993-2008 and was hired as an assistant coach at Hofstra last month.

NHL

The Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues have hired Marc Savard as an assistant coach. The 42-year-old Savard spent 13 years playing in the NHL, splitting time among the Rangers, Flames, Thrashers and Bruins. The two-time All-Star was part of Boston's 2011 Stanley Cup title team.
