Aaron Hicks made a game-saving catch in center field for the final out in the 10th inning, Didi Gregorius had five hits and seven RBIs, and the New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 14-12 in a game that featured five lead changes or ties in the final three innings.

Gleyber Torres scored Gregorius with an RBI single in the top of the 10th and New York tacked on another run on a wild pitch by Kohl Stewart. Hicks ended the game with a diving catch to leave the bases loaded.

Robinson Canó hit three home runs for the first time, breaking loose from a season-long slump in a huge way and leading Jason Vargas and the New York Mets over the San Diego Padres 5-2. The 36-year-old Canó drove in all five runs and went 4 for 4. Vargas pitched one-hit ball for six shutout innings, possibly enhancing his trade value. Canó began the day batting just .243 with six homers in his first season with the Mets.

Christian Vázquez hit a tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning, Marcus Walden bailed Boston out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth and the Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 to move into second place in the AL East for the first time since the second day of the season. The defending World Series champions have recovered from a 3-8 start and improved to a season-high 10 games over .500 at 56-46, moving one percentage point ahead of the Rays (57-47), who have lost seven of eight.

It was a banner night at the plate for Trea Turner of the Washington Nationals, who hit his second career cycle. Turner led off the first inning with a homer, singled in the second and tripled leading off the fifth. After grounding into a double play in the sixth, he doubled home a run during Washington's eight-run seventh. Stephen Strasburg earned his major league-leading 13th win and the Washington Nationals routed the Colorado Rockies 11-1.

Brad Miller threw Castellanos out at the plate in the 14th inning, forcing Philadelphia and Detroit to play a little longer, and the Phillies finally scored in the 15th and beat the Tigers 3-2. Scott Kingery tripled to lead off the 15th and came home on a single by Rhys Hoskins in a game that lasted just short of 4 ½ hours and didn't end until early Wednesday morning.

In MLB news, Tim Tebow has been placed on the injured list because of a cut hand by Triple-A Syracuse, where he is hitting just .163 this season. The 2007 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback was hurt while fielding a ball in the outfield at Toledo on Sunday. Manager Tony DeFrancesco says the cut is in a bad spot and required several stitches. Tebow is in his third year of professional ball and first in Triple-A after a three-year stint at quarterback in the NFL.

Former New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden has been arrested again in New Jersey. Newark police say Gooden was pulled over late Monday night after driving the wrong way down a one-way road and charged with driving while intoxicated. Last month, the 54-year-old Gooden was charged with drug possession after suspected cocaine was found in his car. In a text message to Newsday on Tuesday, Gooden said he is "going away for a while to try and save my life."

Nationals ace Max Scherzer is slated to start Thursday against the Colorado after recovering from inflammation under his right shoulder. The 34-year-old right-hander threw a bullpen session before Washington's game against the Rockies was postponed last night. An All-Star for the seventh straight season, Scherzer is 9-5 with a 2.30 ERA but has not pitched since July 6. He was 7-0 with a 0.87 ERA in his last seven starts.

The 3-year-old boy hit by a foul ball in Cleveland last weekend is showing no signs of serious injury, the Indians said Tuesday. The boy, identified by the team as Henry, was hit by a line drive off the bat of Indians All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor in the sixth inning of a 5-4 win over Kansas City on Sunday. An adult holding the child left the seating area immediately afterward. Cleveland said in a statement the boy was released from a hospital on Sunday evening.

NFL

The Buffalo Bills have signed offensive lineman Isaac Asiata and safety Abraham Wallace two days before the start of training camp. Buffalo placed offensive lineman Jeremiah Sirles on injured reserve and released receiver Da'Mari Scott. And Brian Gaine is returning to the Bills, this time as a special adviser under general manager Brandon Beane. The team announced he'll assist with pro and college scouting. Gaine spent the 2017 season as the Bills' vice president of player personnel before taking over as general manager of the Houston Texans. He was fired less than 18 months later. The Bills earned their first playoff berth since 1999 during Gaine's single season in Buffalo.

Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman was seen wearing a brace or splint on his left thumb at a youth camp he organized last weekend and he will reportedly be limited for three weeks. Pictures of Edelman taken over the weekend show him with a device on his thumb. He was wearing gloves on both hands. Training camp starts Thursday.

Bengals owner Mike Brown opposes an 18-game regular season in the NFL that would include players sitting out a couple of weeks. Brown said Tuesday that he likes the current 16-game format.

BOXING

The International Boxing Hall of Fame is making changes to its voting process, shortening the retirement time for consideration and creating two categories for female fighters. The categories for female boxers are Trailblazer and Modern. Both male and female boxers will be eligible for selection three years after retirement instead of the customary five.

Boxer Maxim Dadashev has died after suffering a brain injury in a fight in Maryland. He was 28. The Russian Boxing Federation says Dadashev died "as a result of the injuries he sustained" in Friday's light-welterweight fight with Subriel Matias at the Theater at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Dadashev was hospitalized shortly after the fight, which was stopped by his corner following the 11th round after Dadashev took numerous shots to the head.
