The Yankees head into the final months of the season with what they have, faltering pitchers, injured starters and all. Masahiro Tanaka failed to hold a two-run lead in a 7-5, rain-interrupted win over Arizona in what became Zack Greinke's final start for the Diamondbacks, and Yankees general manager Brian Cashman admitted he failed to find additional pitching at a reasonable price.

Todd Frazier hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning, Michael Conforto added a two-run single and the New York Mets beat the Chicago White Sox 4-2 for their season-best sixth straight victory. Mets ace Jacob deGrom struck out 11 in a tight pitching duel with fellow All-Star Lucas Giolito.

Kevin Kiermaier homered on the first pitch he saw after coming off the injured list, and Austin Meadows hit a three-run shot to lead Tampa Bay to an 8-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox. The Rays kept pace with Oakland in the AL wild-card race _ even before their trade deadline reinforcements arrive.

The Atlanta Braves squandered a 4-2 lead in the ninth before Josh Donaldson’s 25th home run of the season gave them a 5-4, 10-inning win over the Nats. Adam Duvall homered for the fourth time in five games for Atlanta, which moved 6 ½ games ahead of the second-place Nationals in the NL East. Mike Soroka limited Washington to three hits over seven innings, including Juan Soto’s round-tripper.

Jeff Samardzija saved a depleted bullpen. The right-hander tossed three-hit ball over six scoreless innings, Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval and Kevin Pillar homered in a five-run fifth and the short-handed San Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 Wednesday night.

In MLB news, the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox are setting their sights on an AL wild-card berth, and they're doing it with the players they already have. Red Sox baseball boss Dave Dombrowski conceded on Wednesday that the ballclub doesn't have a "realistic" hope for a fourth straight AL East title, and said he was unwilling to part with a major asset just to push for a one-game wild-card playoff.

The Philadelphia Phillies bolstered their outfield by getting veteran Corey Dickerson from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash and a player to be named. The Oakland Athletics have snared starter Tanner Roark from the Cincinnati Reds for outfield prospect Jameson Hannah. The Reds also shipped second baseman Scooter Gennett to San Francisco for a player to be named.

The Houston Astros have picked up six-time All-Star pitcher Zack Greinke to join a starting rotation that includes 14-game winner Justin Verlander and major league strikeout leader Gerrit Cole. The Diamondbacks have received four minor leaguers for Greinke, who took the mound for Arizona in yesterday’s game against the Yankees. Greinke is 10-4 with a 2.90 ERA this season.

The Yankees have placed slugger Luke Voit on the 10-day injured list with a sports hernia that may require surgery. Voit was pulled from New York's 4-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night and went for an MRI. Manager Aaron Boone says the team is still evaluating the severity of Voit's injury.

Three days after being acquired in a trade, Marcus Stroman joined the New York Mets and immediately declared his new team contenders for a playoff berth this season.

NFL

Buffalo Bills starting center Mitch Morse is out indefinitely after being placed in the NFL's concussion protocol. Coach Sean McDermott provided no details on how Morse was hurt other than saying the concussion diagnosis came on Tuesday. McDermott says running back LeSean McCoy has been excused from practice for personal reasons.

Ty Law was a wide-eyed youngster with big dreams when he started making summer visits to his uncle Tony Dorsett's home in Texas. They fueled his passion for football. And, they guided his journey to greatness. The former New England Patriots star cornerback will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, following in the footsteps of his famous uncle.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti has died at the age of 78. At 5-11, 220 pounds, he was undersized as a linebacker and bypassed in the NFL draft. But he went on to a 15-year NFL career and served as captain of the Miami Dolphins' back-to-back Super Bowl champions, including the 1972 team that completed the NFL's only perfect season. In recent years, Buoniconti struggled with symptoms of CTE, a degenerative brain disease associated with repeated blows to the head. A family spokesman says Buoniconti died yesterday in Bridgehampton, New York.

NHL

The New Jersey Devils have re-signed defenseman Will Butcher to a three-year, $11.2 million contract. General manager Ray Shero says the 24-year-old Butcher will earn $3.5 million this season. He'll make $3.6 million the following season and $4.1 million in 2021-22.

PGA

Jake Beber-Frankel, the 17-year-old son of Academy Award-winning director David Frankel, shot a 10-under 60 for the lowest score in the history of the Boys Junior PGA Championship. Beber-Frankel, from Miami, closed with a par on the ninth hole at Keney Park Golf Course.
