Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run homer in a seven-run first inning, then added a solo shot in the eighth as the Boston Red Sox put a historic pounding on the AL East-leading Yankees, beating New York 19-3 in the opener of their four-game series. The 19 runs were the most scored by the Red Sox against the Yankees in the 117-year history of the rivalry.

Jacob deGrom pitched seven innings of four-hit ball with a rare bit of first-inning run support and the New York Mets beat the San Diego Padres 4-0. Todd Frazier hit a two-run double while New York built a four-run lead in its first turn against starter Eric Lauer. That's the most runs deGrom has ever gotten from the Mets in the first inning. DeGrom struck out nine and walked one on 105 pitches in the matinee.

A couple of former Nationals led the Colorado Rockies’ ninth-inning rally in an 8-7 victory at Washington. Daniel Murphy hit a solo shot in the eighth and drove in the tiebreaking run with a fielder’s choice, three batters after Ian Desmond knotted the score with a home run. Anthony Rendon belted a three-run drive for the Nats, who fell 4 ½ games behind the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves.

In MLB news, five-time All-Star Troy Tulowitzki has announced his retirement more than three months after he played his last game for the New York Yankees. He spent most of 2017 on the disabled list with ankle injuries, and then missed all of last season following an April 2018 surgery on both heels. Tulowitzki finished with a .290 average, 225 homers and 780 RBIs in 13 seasons with Colorado, Toronto and the Yankees.

The New York Yankees have put outfielder Bret Gardner on the 10-day injured list. Gardner has left knee inflammation. The move was retroactive to July 22. Gardner has batted .243 with 15 homers and 41 RBIs this season.

NFL

The New York Jets and first-round pick Quinnen Williams have agreed to terms on a four-year contract worth $32.5 million fully guaranteed. The former Alabama defensive tackle was the No. 3 overall selection in the NFL draft in April. Williams' deal includes a nearly $21.7 million signing bonus and a standard fifth-year team option.

Le'Veon Bell says he's feeling rested and healthy after participating in his first training camp practice with the New York Jets. The star running back sat out last season while in a contract dispute with Pittsburgh. He signed a four-year, $52.5 million contract with the Jets in March and is expected to give New York's offense a huge boost. Bell jokes that he's up for 500 touches after having an NFL-high 406 in 2017 with the Steelers.

The NFL's oldest offensive backfield tandem of LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore provides the Bills a running start in opening training camp. The 36-year-old Gore was activated off the non-football injury list after passing his physical. And the 31-year-old McCoy showed a burst amid questions he's lost a step following a career-low season last year.

New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard fractured his left thumb in the team's first practice at training camp. The Giants announced the injury a couple of hours after practice ended.

WNBA

The WNBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas starts at 3:30 p.m. Saturday – with a few experimental rules this time around. Team Elena Delle Donne and Team A’ja Wilson will play with a 20-second shot clock instead of the usual 24, and the league is also adding a hockey-style live substitution rule. Each team will be allowed once per quarter to have a player sub in on offense. There will still be normal substitutions during game stoppages.

PGA

Jon Rahm matched the lowest round of his PGA Tour career to take a three-stroke lead in the first round of the FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis. Rahm took advantage of nearly perfect greens while firing an 8-under 62 that included five birdie putts of at least 16 feet in a bogey-free round. Bubba Watson, Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Cantlay, Cameron Smith and Shugo Imahira shot 65.
