COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Ohio State has placed coach Urban Meyer on paid administrative leave while it investigates claims that his wife knew about allegations of abuse against an assistant coach years before he was fired last week.

Courtney Smith gave an interview to Stadium and provided text messages to former ESPN reporter Brett McMurphy between her and Shelley Meyer in 2015 and with the wives of other Buckeyes coaches. Smith also provided threatening texts she claims came from her ex-husband, former assistant Zach Smith.

Zach Smith was fired last week after an Ohio court granted a domestic violence protective order to Courtney Smith.

MLB

It was a tough afternoon for the Seattle Mariners, who dropped another game in the AL West standings yesterday and lost possession of the second wild-card spot.

Marwin Gonzalez belted a pair of solo homers and Max Stassi added a three-run blast as the Houston Astros hammered the Mariners, 8-3 in Seattle. Jake Marisnick hit a two-run blast, to support Dallas Keuchel, who gave up three runs over seven innings to even his record at 9-9.

Wade LeBlanc surrendered three round-trippers and seven runs as the Mariners fell five games behind the AL West-leading Astros.

Seattle has dropped 10 of its last 15 games.

The Athletics have pulled into a tie with Seattle for the final AL wild-card berth by completing a season sweep of Toronto, 8-3. Jonathan Lucroy had three hits and four RBIs and Franklin Barretto was 3-for-4 with a two-run double and a solo homer.

Sean Manaea was limited the Blue Jays to a run and five hits over six-plus innings to help the A's win for the 30th time in their last 40 games.

Elsewhere in the majors:

The Indians have pushed their lead in the AL Central to 10 games by blanking the second-place Twins, 2-0 in Minnesota. Carlos Carrasco won his fifth straight decision by striking out 10 and limiting the Twins to four hits over 7 1/3 innings. Brad Hand recorded the final five outs for the Indians, who have allowed just 13 runs over their last six games.

Trey Mancini was 3-for-5 with a solo homer and two RBIs as the Baltimore Orioles topped the New York Yankees, 7-5. Renato Nunez also had three hits and two RBIs for the Birds, who led 7-1 in the third inning and evened their season series with the Yanks at six games apiece. Sonny Gray was chased in the third inning as the Yankees fell 5 ½ games behind the AL East-leading Red Sox. Boston had the night off and host The New York Yankees Thursday at 7:10 p.m.

Cole Hamels won his Cubs debut and Willson Contreras went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs in a 9-2 thrashing of the Pirates in Pittsburgh. Hamels struck out nine while holding the Bucs to an unearned run and three hits over five innings. Ben Zobrist and Jason Heyward also had three of Chicago's 15 hits.

Chicago reclaimed first place in the NL Central when Yasmani Grandal belted a two-run, walk-off home run in the 10th inning to send the Dodgers past the Brewers, 6-4. Grandal also homered in the fifth inning, one batter before Brian Dozier provided his first round-tripper since coming to Los Angeles. The Brewers now sit one game behind Chicago, while the Dodgers are in a first-place tie with Arizona in the NL West.

The Cardinals' bullpen threw shutout ball over 6 1/3 innings of a 6-3 victory against Colorado. Yadier Molina drove in two runs and was one of three Redbirds with three hits. Nolan Arenado collected his 80th RBI for the Rockies, who are one game off the NL West lead.

Tommy Milone picked up his first major league win in 15 ½ months and Anthony Rendon slammed a two-run homer off Noah Syndergaard as the Nationals beat the Mets, 5-3 to complete a two-game sweep. Milone struck out nine and allowed a run and three hits over seven innings to help the Nats climb back over .500. Jose Reyes homered from both sides of the plate for New York, which was outscored 30-7 in the two-game set. The Mets host the Braves Thursday at 7:10 p.m.

Jake Bauers smacked a two-run homer and Willy Adames added a solo shot and an RBI single in the Rays' 7-2 win against the Angels. Mallex Smith lined a go-ahead triple to cap Tampa Bay's three-run fourth after Los Angeles grabbed a 2-0 lead. Winning pitcher Jake Faria worked 3 2/3 innings of one-run relief.

Jose Iglesias collected three RBIs and Jim Adduci hit a solo homer while the Tigers were building a 6-0 lead in a 7-4 downing of the Reds. Detroit finished the game without starting pitcher Mike Fiers, who suffered a bruised left shin from a comebacker off the bat of Mason Williams. X-rays were negative, but it was unclear whether Fiers will make his next scheduled start.

Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer and drove in four in leading the Royals' 10-5 rout of the White Sox. Jakob Junis pitched 5 2/3 innings of four-run ball in his first win since May 18. Yoan Moncada broke out of a slump with his fifth career leadoff homer, two hits and two walks, but he also committed one of two costly errors for the White Sox.

The Braves and Marlins were rained out in Atlanta, leading to a split doubleheader on Aug. 13. The postponement keeps the Braves a half-game behind the NL East-leading Phillies, who were idle.

Elsewhere in the Majors:

Shawn Kelley's outburst on the mound got him booted from the Nationals. The reliever has been designated for assignment, a day after he threw his glove to the ground and glared into the dugout while working the ninth inning of a 25-4 blowout of the Mets. Manager Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo say Kelley's actions were disrespectful and unprofessional. Washington recalled right-hander Jimmy Cordero from Triple-A Syracuse to take Kelley's place on the roster.

Mets left-hander Steven Matz will be evaluated by doctors after experiencing forearm discomfort. Manager Mickey Callaway says Matz reported the pain after he failed to get out of the first inning in Tuesday night's 25-4 loss to the Washington Nationals. Matz threw 32 pitches, faced 11 batters and allowed seven runs on eight hits. Callaway says the 27-year-old was experiencing tightness and a "dead arm."

Slick fielding shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria has been designated for assignment by the Rays to open a roster spot for outfielder Tommy Pham. The 29-year-old infielder was hitting .258 with three homers and 26 RBIs, and he had lost his starting role to rookie Willy Adames. Tampa Bay has seven days to trade or release Hechavarria, who had beaten the Rays in salary arbitration last winter.

A lawyer for former Blue Jays pitcher Roberto Osuna says his client will plead not guilty to an assault charge. Osuna was suspended for 75 games for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy and was traded to the Houston Astros.

After a historic drop during the season's first three months that concerned the sport's leadership, the big league batting average in July was .255, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. It raised the season average two points to .248, but still on pace for the lowest combined total since 1972. Hits outnumbered strikeouts for just the second month this year.

NFL

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz didn't participate in 11-on-11 drills for the third straight practice for precautionary reasons after taking part the first three days.

Coach Doug Pederson emphasized that Wentz hasn't suffered any setbacks. He says he's encouraged by Wentz's recovery from surgery to repair a torn left ACL last December. Wentz again was on the field for the 7-on-7 portion of practice.

Preseason Opener:

The 2018 Pro Football Hall of Fame game between the Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens takes place on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. NBC will televise the NFL's preseason opener.

In other NFL news:

Colts offensive lineman Jack Mewhort unexpectedly has announced his retirement following a morning practice at training camp. His once-promising career got derailed by a series of injuries that kept him out of 11 of the Colts' last 20 games.

The Cowboys have activated defensive end Randy Gregory after a year away from football on a substance-abuse suspension. Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated him not long before the Cowboys reported to training camp. The 25-year-old former Nebraska star participated in a walkthrough practice for the first time Wednesday.

The Seahawks added depth to their offensive line by signing J.R. Sweezy. The veteran guard rose to prominence during his first four seasons in the league playing for the Seahawks. He signed with Tampa Bay prior to the 2016 season and started 14 games last year but finished that season on injured reserve with a leg injury.

Veteran receivers Brandon Tate and Michael Floyd have joined the New Orleans Saints. Saints coach Sean Payton says he is also eager to try Tate as a kick and punt returner. New Orleans also has activated tight end Michael Hoomanawanui, who began training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

Browns starting guard Joel Bitonio is sliding over to left tackle. Bitonio will replace 10-time Pro Bowler Joe Thomas, who retired after last season.

Jets linebacker Dylan Donahue has pleaded guilty to DWI charges in connection with a wrong-way crash in the Lincoln Tunnel last February. Three other charges were dropped as part of a plea deal, but he will have to drive with an ignition interlock device for a year after his license is reinstated.

Offensive coordinator Ryan Day will serve as acting head coach for the Buckeyes.

NHL

The Arizona Coyotes will retire former captain Shane Doan's number during a pregame ceremony on Feb. 24.

Doan will have his No. 19 retired before the Coyotes face the Winnipeg Jets, joining former Arizona players Keith Tkachuk, Jeremy Roenick and Teppo Numminen in the franchise's ring of honor. Former Winnipeg players Bobby Hull, Thomas Steen and Dale Hawerchuk also are in the Coyotes' ring of honor.

Doan spent his entire 21-year career with the Coyotes before retiring prior to last season.

SPORTS BETTING

Resorts Casino Hotel and DraftKings have received approval to become the first companies to offer online and mobile sports betting in New Jersey. The state Division of Gaming Enforcement gave approval Wednesday to the casino and its Boston-based online partner to launch an invitation-only version of mobile sports betting, which will undergo days of testing before becoming fully available. Mobile and online sports betting are seen as a promising segment of the nascent sports betting market.
