Noah Syndergaard put aside trade talk to turn an eighth-inning lead over to his relievers, and the New York Mets rebounded from another bullpen meltdown when Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto hit consecutive home runs in the 11th for a 5-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. In their first game since trading for All-Star pitcher Marcus Stroman, the Mets extended a winning streak to five games for the first time since April 2018.

Diamondbacks rookie Taylor Clarke was an impressive winner in his Yankee Stadium debut, five days after the birth of his daughter, and Arizona got home runs from Christian Walker and Carson Kelly to beat New York 4-2. Nick Ahmed hit an RBI single for the Diamondbacks, who have won all three meetings with the AL East leaders this year.

Avísail García homered and added the go-ahead, two-run double in the sixth inning to rescue manager Kevin Cash from an untimely pitching change, and the Tampa Bay Rays held back the charging Red Sox by beating Boston 6-5.

The Braves have regained a 5 ½-game lead over Washington in the NL East after Adam Duvall went 4-for-5 with a pair of solo homers and three runs scored in Atlanta’s 11-8 victory against the Nationals. Josh Donaldson added a three-run blast while the Braves were building an 11-1 lead. Julio Teheran allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings to finish with a 1.48 ERA for the month.

Drew Smyly tossed seven shutout innings and Hoskins homered to lead Philadelphia to a 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. The Phillies took the first game of a three-game set between teams in the hunt for an NL wild-card spot. It was the first of seven games the teams will play over the next two weeks, and they could go a long way toward deciding which might play in October.

NFL

New York Jets wide receiver Jamison Crowder has been cleared by the team to practice after an injury scare left his status uncertain. Crowder left practice Monday after hurting his left foot and walking with a noticeable limp. The team announced on Twitter that Crowder is expected to rejoin his teammates at practice Wednesday.

A judge has dismissed the last of three federal lawsuits targeting Roger Goodell and other NFL officials over officiating at January's NFC title game between the Los Angeles Rams and the New Orleans Saints. That leaves one state court lawsuit pending over game officials' failure to call a blatant penalty at a crucial point, helping the Rams advance to the Super Bowl.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

UConn coach Randy Edsall says linebacker Eli Thomas won't return to football after suffering a stroke last season. The senior had been working on his rehabilitation since having a stroke last October before a weightlifting session. Edsall says Thomas has not been cleared by doctors to play again and has accepted that decision.

SOCCER

National team coach Jill Ellis is stepping down after leading the United States to back-to-back Women's World Cup titles. Ellis has been coach of the team since 2014, guiding it to victories at the World Cup in 2015 and earlier this month in France. U.S. Soccer will begin the search for a new coach after a general manager for the women's national team is named.

The players' association for the U.S. men's national team is criticizing U.S. Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro's efforts to counter arguments made by the women's team in a fight over pay. The association sent a letter to the federation saying, “The Federation correctly points to the different payment systems with USWNT players on contracts, but we do not believe that justifies discrediting the work they do or the real value of their profound impact on the American sports landscape.” Cordeiro sent a letter to the federation's members Monday that said U.S. Soccer paid the World Cup champion women's team more than the men's team over the period from 2010 to 2018.

IAAF

South African Caster Semenya won't defend her title in the 800 meters at the world championships this fall. A Swiss court overturned a temporary ruling that allowed her to compete in international events without taking testosterone-suppressing drugs. Semenya is locked in a court battle with the IAAF, track and field's governing body, over rules that require her to take the drugs to counter her naturally high testosterone levels.
