PGA

Brooks Koepka has won his first PGA Championship, playing poised and mistake-free golf down the stretch amid ear-splitting roars for Tiger Woods and a late charge from a revitalized Adam Scott.

The U.S. Open champion closed with a 4-under 66 to reach 16 under for the tournament. That left Koepka three shots clear of Scott and two ahead of Woods, whose Sunday charge electrified the packed grounds of Bellerive Country Club as if it were a decade ago.

Woods capped a 6-under 64 with a long birdie putt at the 18th, pumping his fist as if he had won. It was the four-time PGA champion's lowest final round in a major.

Meanwhile, the unflappable Koepka became the fifth player to win the U.S. Open and the PGA in the same year. The others are Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen.

MLB

Chris Sale celebrated his return from the disabled list by striking out 12 over five dominant innings, and the Boston Red Sox moved 50 games over .500 by completing a sweep of the lowly Baltimore Orioles with a 4-1 victory on Sunday. Sale (12-4) was placed on the DL on July 28 with left shoulder inflammation. Judging by his performance, the injury is no longer an issue. The left-hander allowed just one hit, a clean third-inning single to left field by Renato Nunez, and walked none. Sale is 7-0 over his last nine starts. Boston has the night off as they head to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.

The New York Yankees blasted the Texas Rangers 7-2 Sunday to remain 9 ½ games back of the Bosox in the AL East. CC Sabathia threw six shutout innings of one-hit ball and Giancarlo Stanton homered for the fifth time in six games. Didi Gregorius also homered and turned in a nifty defensive play for New York, who won for the sixth time in seven games. The Yankees host the Mets in the third subway series of the season Monday at 7 p.m.

In other games:

Ryon Healy hit a tying home run with two outs in the ninth inning, Mitch Haniger delivered an RBI double in the 10th inning and the Seattle Mariners beat Houston 4-3 Sunday to sweep a four-game series from the AL West-leading Astros. It's the first time in franchise history that Seattle swept a four-game series from the Astros. The third-place Mariners pulled within four games of Houston.

Jed Lowrie homered and moved over 1,000 hits for his career, and the Oakland Athletics held on for an 8-7 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, their ninth win in 11 games. The A's, who currently occupy the second AL wild-card spot, moved within 2½ games of first-place Houston in the AL West. The Astros have lost four consecutive games.

Carlos Carrasco struck out nine in seven innings, and the Cleveland Indians held off the Chicago White Sox for a 9-7 win on Sunday. AL Central-leading Cleveland had a 9-1 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, and almost blew it. Run-scoring singles by Tim Anderson and Kevan Smith trimmed the Indians' lead to 9-5 in the ninth before manager Terry Francona replaced Dan Otero with Cody Allen. Adam Engel greeted the closer with a two-run triple before Allen struck out Nicky Delmonico and Yolmer Sanchez for his 23rd save in 26 chances.

Ozzie Albies led off the seventh inning with a tiebreaking homer, one of three hit by Atlanta, and the Braves overcame 19 hits by Milwaukee to beat the Brewers 8-7 on Sunday. Ronald Acuna Jr. and Dansby Swanson hit two-run homers for Atlanta, which took two of three in a matchup of playoff contenders. Jesus Aguilar drove in four runs with three hits, including a three-run homer, for Milwaukee. The Brewers left 13 runners on base.

Freddy Galvis hit a grand slam, Travis Jankowski stole four bases and scored three times, and the San Diego Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-3 on Sunday. Galvis connected against Jake Arrieta in the third inning, hitting a two-out drive to center for his first career slam. It was his third homer in his last seven games and No. 8 on the season. Last-place San Diego won for the fifth time in seven games, including two of three against contending Philadelphia.

The Chicago Cubs extended their NL Central Division lead over Milwaukee with a dramatic 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals. Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth with two out, pinch hitter David Bote smashed a grand slam against reliever Ryan Madson. Bote's long drive to center field came after Washington's Max Scherzer and Chicago's Cole Hamels delivered simply dominant starts. The Cubs are 4 games up on the Brewers.

Yadier Molina broke a tie with a two-run single in the seventh inning, Tyson Ross won his St. Louis debut and the Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Royals 8-2 on Sunday to win their fifth straight, matching a season high. The Cardinals moved eight games above .500, equaling their season high set on June 11, and are a National League-best 12-4 since July 27. Manager Mike Matheny was fired on July 14 in an attempt to jump-start the disappointing team.

Paul Goldschmidt hit two of Arizona's five homers, and the NL West-leading Diamondbacks avoided a sweep by pounding the Cincinnati Reds 9-2 on Sunday. Daniel Descalso, Eduardo Escobar and David Peralta also connected for Arizona, and Zack Godley pitched 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball. Goldschmidt finished with three hits and three RBIs, and Peralta also drove in three runs.

Chris Iannetta drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk in the ninth inning, and Colorado Rockies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 after squandering a late lead Sunday. It was the second walk-off win in as many days for Colorado. Ryan McMahon lined a three-run homer in the ninth on Saturday. The Rockies took three of four for their first home series win against the Dodgers since April 7-9, 2017. The loss dropped the Dodgers out of a first-place tie with Arizona in the NL West.

Dereck Rodriguez pitched seven innings of two-hit ball to continue his sparkling rookie season and the San Francisco Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Sunday. Rodriguez (6-1) faced three batters over the minimum, allowing one run with four strikeouts and a walk. Both hits off him came in the second inning. The 26-year-old righty has a 2.25 ERA, lowest among NL rookies.

Matthew Boyd pitched six strong innings and the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 4-2 Sunday on Jack Morris Day at Comerica Park. The game started 20 minutes late because of the ceremony to retire Morris' No. 47 jersey. Morris and longtime teammate Alan Trammell were inducted into the Hall of Fame earlier this month. Boyd (7-10) won for the third time in four starts, giving up one run on two hits and a walk in six innings. He struck out three.

Kevin Pillar scored the tiebreaking run on an infield grounder in the sixth inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. Devon Travis had two hits and drove in a run as the Blue Jays won for the second time in nine meetings with the Rays.

Jose Reyes hit a two-run homer, Noah Syndergaard struck out seven in seven innings and the New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 on Sunday. Michael Conforto also connected for New York, which took two of three in the weekend series. Wilmer Flores also knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly. Syndergaard (8-2) allowed three runs and seven hits. He improved to 4-1 in his last five starts.

In other baseball news:

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Luke Weaver cut his finger while opening a food tray in the clubhouse at Kansas City and was scratched from his start against the Royals. Weaver had been scheduled to pitch Sunday. The accident occurred Saturday night when the righty sliced the index finger on his pitching hand on the aluminum foil covering a tray. Super glue was applied, but it did not hold sufficiently for Weaver to pitch deep into a game. Tyson Ross, claimed by the Cardinals last week off waivers from San Diego, pitched in place of Weaver.

The Colorado Rockies held All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado (ahr-eh-NAH'-doh) out of the starting lineup for a second straight game because of a sore right shoulder. Pat Valaika (vuh-LAY'-kuh) filled in at third Sunday as the Rockies closed out a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Arenado was removed from Friday's game in the fifth inning when he tweaked his shoulder on a throw. The five-time Gold Glove winner has been bothered by the shoulder for about a week. Arenado is hitting .307 with 29 home runs and 82 RBIs this season.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are sending right-handers Kenta Maeda and Ross Stripling to the bullpen to make room for two starters about to return from the disabled list. Left-hander Alex Wood is scheduled to come off the disabled list and pitch Tuesday against San Francisco. He went on the DL on Aug. 4 with adductor tendinitis. Lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu is healed from a strained groin that has sidelined him since early May. Ryu is expected to be activated and start on Wednesday. Stripling will be ready for bullpen action on Tuesday and Maeda on Wednesday. The Dodgers are using a closer-by-committee approach in the bullpen with Kenley Jansen sidelined because of an irregular heartbeat.

The Cleveland Indians have put slugger Edwin Encarnacion on the disabled list because of swelling in his left biceps. Manager Terry Francona made the announcement after the AL Central leaders beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1 on Saturday night. Encarnacion left Friday night's game and had an MRI in Cleveland on Saturday. Encarnacion has struggled since being hit on the right hand by Yankees reliever Chad Green before the All-Star break. Encarnacion is third on the team with 25 homers and second with 81 RBIs.

The Texas Rangers activated outfielder Delino DeShields from the seven-day concussion disabled list before their series finale against the New York Yankees. DeShields was batting ninth today and playing center field. In a corresponding move, Texas optioned outfielder/infielder Drew Robinson to Triple-A Round Rock. DeShields was placed on the disabled list on Aug. 4 with concussion symptoms.

LLWS

Rhode Island’s Coventry Little League defeated Pittsfield (Mass.) American Little League, 3-2, Sunday morning, securing the New England Region crown and a trip to Williamsport, Pa., for the 2018 Little League Baseball World Series.

The region championship game was delayed by one day due Saturday's rain at the East Region's A. Bartlett Giamatti Leadership Training Center in Bristol, Connecticut.

Coventry will go against the Southwest regional winner, Post Oak Little League, from Houston, Texas, Thursday August 16th at 7 p.m.

NFL

Kansas City Chiefs right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif left practice Sunday to be evaluated for a concussion, while defensive tackle Xavier Williams and running back Damien Williams also left early. The Chiefs said Xavier Williams had a stinger and Damien Williams hurt his shoulder.

Eric Berry did not participate in practice after skipping the Chiefs' preseason opener against Houston on Thursday night. Their star safety is dealing with a sore heel.

In other NFL news:

San Francisco 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon will miss at least one week with a strained right calf. McKinnon injured himself in practice on Sunday and the team says he will be re-evaluated in a week. McKinnon signed a $30 million, four-year contract in March. He lost four yards on three carries during his preseason debut, when he played one possession against Dallas on Thursday. The 49ers already are without backup running back Matt Breida, who is out until the start of the regular season with a shoulder injury. Joe Williams also missed practice because of a death in the family.

The Cleveland Browns are sticking with Tyrod Taylor as their starting quarterback, despite Baker Mayfield's impressive preseason debut. The No. 1 overall draft pick threw two touchdown passes in Thursday's win over the New York Giants. Quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese says they liked what they saw from Mayfield but "he has a long way to go." The Browns want him to spend his rookie season watching and learning behind Taylor.

The Buffalo Bills have shuffled defensive tackles by signing Tyrunn Walker and reaching an injury settlement to release John Hughes. Walker joins his third team in three years. He spent last season with the Los Angeles Rams, three seasons with New Orleans and two with Detroit. Hughes was signed when the Bills opened training camp last month, and was injured during Buffalo's first preseason game Thursday.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive ends Yannick Ngakoue and Dante Fowler had to be separated repeatedly following practice Sunday. They had to be pulled apart by teammates, coaches and security personnel outside the practice-field gates.

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed quarterback Christian Hackenberg and waived rookie offensive lineman Ian Park. Hackenberg was selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the New York Jets in 2016 but didn't play in a game. He was traded to Oakland in May for a conditional 2019 draft pick and was released two weeks later. The Eagles already have plenty of quarterback but Hackenberg gives them another arm in camp while Carson Wentz continues his recovery following surgery to repair two torn knee ligaments.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

The attorney for the family of the University of Maryland football player who died after a strenuous offseason workout is calling for Terrapins coach DJ Durkin to be fired.

Billy Murphy Jr. says the team failed to properly react after offensive lineman Jordan McNair fell ill on the practice field. The 19-year-old was hospitalized May 29 and died June 13. The attorney said Sunday that the preliminary death certificate showed "symptoms of heatstroke are present."

Durkin was placed on administrative leave Saturday in the wake of reports that he and his staff mistreated players since his arrival at the campus two years ago.

NASCAR

Kevin Harvick has won at Michigan International Speedway, giving him a NASCAR-high seven victories this season.

His No. 4 Ford finished 3-plus seconds ahead of Brad Keselowski's No. 2 Ford on Sunday.

Kyle Busch, who started Sunday with the points lead, finished third in his No. 18 Toyota. Austin Dillon, in the No. 3 Chevrolet, was fourth followed by Ryan Blaney's No. 12 Ford.

Martin Truex Jr., the third driver in NASCAR's Big 3 with Harvick and Busch, was 14th in the 40-car field in his No. 78 Toyota.

Busch has won six races this year and Truex has finished in first four times. The rest of the field has combined to win just six of 23 races.
