Josh Bailey tallied in the fourth shootout round and Mathew Barzal notched his 17th goal of the season as the Islanders outlasting the Devils, 2-1. Thomas Greiss made 30 saves through overtime and was perfect on New Jersey's four shootout attempts as New York kept its two-point lead over Washington in the Metropolitan Division.
Teuvo Teravainen scored his second goal of the game 3:25 into OT to push the Hurricanes past the Sabres, 6-5. Brock McGinn Greg McKegg and Justin Faulk also scored for Carolina, which squandered leads of 2-0 and 5-3.
The Capitals kept pace as Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the winning goal at 4:12 of overtime to complete their 4-3 victory over the Avalanche. Kuznetsov tallied twice and Pheonix Copley stopped 34 shots as the Caps dealt Colorado its fifth consecutive loss.
The Flyers' eight-game winning streak ended when Tyler Toffoli scored in the sixth shootout round to give Los Angeles a 3-2 victory at Philadelphia. Adrian Kempe scored in the second period and had one of the Kings' three shootout goals in their third straight win.
The Panthers pulled out a 3-2 win over the Penguins on Mike Matheson's goal 4:14 into overtime. Evgenii Dadonov and Colton Sceviour also scored as Florida won for the fifth time in seven games while dealing Pittsburgh its third straight loss.
Elsewhere on NHL ice, the St. Louis Blues continued to improve their Stanley Cup playoff chances by handing the Tampa Bay Lightning their first shutout loss of the season. Brayden Schenn beat Andrei Vasilevskiy 4:01 into overtime to give the Blues their fourth straight win, 1-0 at Tampa. Vasilevskiy had stopped 38 shots before Schenn moved St. Louis a season-high three games over .500. Rookie Jordan Binnington made 32 saves against the NHL's top team en route to his second shutout in 13 games this season. The outcome leaves the Blues eighth in the NHL's Western Conference standings. Tampa Bay fell to 39-11-4.
Jonathan Marchessault tallied twice before Brayden McNabb furnished the eventual game-winner in the Golden Knights' 4-3 verdict over the Red Wings. William Karlsson had a goal and an assist to help Vegas win its second straight since a four-game skid.
Jonathan Drouin scored twice and had a pair of third-period assists as the Canadiens whipped the Jets' 5-2. Shea Weber, Phillip Danault and Jesperi Kotkaniemi tallied in the final period as part of Montreal's 53-shot assault on Connor Hellebuyck.
Winnipeg's lead in the Central Division is down to one point over Nashville after Ryan Johansen scored 43 seconds into overtime to give the Predators a 3-2 victory against Dallas. Viktor Arvidsson had a goal and an assist, and Craig Smith also scored for Nashville.
Evander Kane scored twice and finished with three points in the Sharks' 5-2 victory over Calgary. Tomas Hertl also scored twice, Brent Burns added a goal and Martin Jones made 36 saves as San Jose pulled within two points of the Pacific-leading Flames.
Darnell Nurse scored 2:15 into the first period and the Oilers stopped a six-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory at Minnesota. Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each had two assists, and Cam Talbot handled 35 shots in Edmonton's fifth victory in 20 games.
The Blackhawks made it six straight wins by getting an overtime goal from Jonathan Toews in a 4-3 win over the Canucks. Alex DeBrincat scored twice for Chicago, which is within two points of a postseason slot.
The Blue Jackets pushed aside the Coyotes, 4-2 as Boone Jenner and Josh Anderson each had a goal and an assist. David Savard and Lukas Sedlak also scored and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 shots as Columbus won its second in a row following a five-game skid.
Anders Nilsson made 19 of his 45 saves in the third period of the Senators' 4-0 shutout of the Ducks. Matt Duchene scored twice to back Nilsson's first shutout of the season and fifth of his career.
NBA
The Lakers bounced back from Tuesday's 42-point loss at Indiana by beating the Celtics, 129-128 on Rajon Rondo's 20-footer as time expired. LeBron James had 28 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. Kyle Kuzma added 25 points and Rondo had 17 points and 10 assists for Los Angeles.
Checking out Thursday's other NBA action, the Indiana Pacers continue to surge since reeling off four straight losses following a season-ending injury to All-Star Victor Oladipo. Bojan Bogdanovic had 29 points and seven rebounds to lead the Pacers to their fourth straight win, a 116-92 rout of the Clippers. Myles Turner had 17 points and six blocks, while Thaddeus Young and Darren Collison each scored 14 in the Pacers' second straight blowout victory. Indiana scored a season-high 71 points by halftime, two days after getting 69 over the first two quarters versus the Lakers. The Pacers scored 13 straight during a 17-2 run late in the second quarter to pull away.
Pascal Siakam scored a career-high 33 points and Fred VanVleet added a career-best 30 to send the Raptors to a 119-101 win over the Hawks. Toronto fell behind by 17 in the first half and played without resting All-Star Kawhi Leonard before improving to 2-0 on their three-game road trip.
The Thunder won for the ninth time in 10 games as Russell Westbrook notched his eighth straight triple-double in a 117-95 pounding of Memphis. Westbrook finished with 15 points, 15 assists and 13 rebounds, leaving him one short of Wilt Chamberlain's NBA record for consecutive triple-doubles.
CJ McCollum nailed seven 3-pointers as part of his 30-point performance in the Trail Blazers' 127-118 win against the Spurs. Damian Lillard added 24 points and nine assists in Portland's seventh victory in nine games.
Terrence Ross nailed six 3-pointers and scored 32 points on 13 of 23 shooting to help the Magic post a 122-112 victory over the Timberwolves. Nikola Vucevic added 21 points, Aaron Gordon 19 and Evan Fournier 18 for Orlando.
In NBA trades, former No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz has been dealt by the 76ers to the Magic for Jonathan Simmons, a 2020 first-round pick and a second-rounder this year. Fultz has played in only 33 games since being taken No. 1 overall in the 2017 draft, averaging 7.7 points and 3.4 rebounds. A person with information on the negotiations says the 76ers are adding James Ennis from the Rockets for draft considerations. Philadelphia will become the sixth club for the well-traveled Ennis, who averaged 7.4 points for the Rockets this season.
A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that the Celtics have traded Jabari Bird and cash to the Hawks.
The Knicks have waived Enes Kanter and Wesley Matthews, allowing them to sign with other teams for a playoff run. The Knicks were unable to find a trade before Thursday's deadline for Kanter, their former starting center who had fallen out of the rotation.
In other NBA moves, the Raptors made a major move at the NBA trade deadline as they try to catch the Milwaukee Bucks for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The Raptors have picked up Marc Gasol from Memphis in a trade that sends Jonas Valanciunas to the Grizzlies. Gasol is averaging 15.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 53 games this season. Valanciunas has started just 10 of his 30 games this season but is averaging 12.8 points and 7.2 boards. The Raptors also sent CJ Miles and Delon Wright to Memphis, along with a second-round pick in 2024.
The Pelicans have agreed to trade forward Nikola Mirotic to Milwaukee as part of a three-team deal that sends the Bucks' Jason Smith and Detroit's Stanley Johnson to New Orleans. The Pelicans also receive multiple second-round draft choices.
A person familiar with the negotiations says Nik Stauskas and Wade Baldwin are going from the Rockets to the Pacers in their third move this week. Stauskas and Baldwin have been members of the Trail Blazers, Cavaliers, Rockets and Pacers since Monday, and aren't guaranteed of staying with Indiana.
A person with knowledge of the move says the Clippers are sending Michael Beasley and Ivica Zubac to the Lakers for Mike Muscala. The deal opens a roster spot for the Lakers if they have interest in signing free-agent forward Carmelo Anthony.
A person familiar with the terms says Shelvin Mack is going from the Grizzlies to the Hawks for Tyler Dorsey. Mack averaged 7.9 points in 53 games with the Grizzlies this year.
The Kings have acquired forward Caleb Swanigan from the Trail Blazers for forward Skal Labissiere in a trade of former first-round picks.
And in other NBA news, the NBA All-Star game rosters are set following selections made by team captains LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo. James chose Kevin Durant with the first overall pick for the second straight year and picked former Cavaliers teammate Kyrie Irving. They'll be joined in the Team LeBron starting five by Kawhi Leonard and James Harden. Antetokounmpo will start Stephen Curry, Joel Embiid, Paul George and hometown favorite Kemba Walker for the Feb. 17 game in Charlotte.
James took Anthony Davis among his reserves, along with Klay Thompson, Damian Lillard, Russell Westbrook, LaMarcus Aldridge, Karl-Anthony Towns and Bradley Beal. Antetokounmpo's bench had Milwaukee teammate Khris Middleton, Nikola Jokic, Ben Simmons, Blake Griffin, D'Angelo Russell, Nikola Vucevic and Kyle Lowry. Simmons was subsequently sent to Team LeBron for Westbrook.

In women's basketball, Louisville topped Syracuse, 76-51, Siena defeated Iona, 66-45, and Marist beat Manhattan, 62-51.
In top-25 basketball, fourth-ranked Gonzaga has reeled off 13 consecutive victories since a two-game skid dropped them from the top of The Associated Press men's basketball poll. Brandon Clarke had 20 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks as the Bulldogs clobbered San Francisco, 92-62. Zach Norvell scored 13 straight Gonzaga points to give his team a 41-30 lead. Rui Hachimura added 17 points and Norvell Jr. 16 in Gonzaga's 16th consecutive win over the Dons.
In other top-25 men's finals, Corey Davis Jr. scored 26 points on 8-for-13 shooting to help 12th-ranked Houston down UCF, 77-68. Armoni Brooks added 14 points for the Cougars, who improved to 22-1 overall and 9-1 in the American Athletic Conference.
Jordan Bohannon matched his season high with 25 points, including the last 11 for No. 20 Iowa in a 77-72 victory at Indiana. Tyler Cook added 21 points as the Hawkeyes moved to 18-5 with their second straight win and first in their last four meetings with the Hoosiers.
Jarron Cumberland scored 17 points and keyed a late rally as No. 25 Cincinnati overcame 40 percent shooting to beat the Memphis Tigers, 69-64. The Bearcats were up just 58-55 with 2 ½ minutes left until Cumberland scored nine straight Cincinnati points.

Hall of Fame outfielder Frank Robinson has died at 83. Robinson is the only player to earn the MVP award in both leagues and became the first black manager when he took over the Cleveland Indians in 1975. He took MVP honors while helping the 1961 Reds win the NL pennant, then earned another MVP plaque while winning the Triple Crown and a World Series with the 1966 Orioles. The menacing slugger ranked fourth in major league history with 586 home runs when he retired as a player in 1976. He worked in Major League Baseball's front office and also served as manager of the Giants, Orioles, Expos and Nationals. Robinson has been in failing health and in hospice care at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles.
In other MLB news, the Phillies have acquired All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto from the Marlins for catcher Jorge Alfaro, two pitching prospects and $250,000 in international signing bonus pool allocation. The 27-year-old Realmuto was a first-time All-Star last season before ending the year hitting .277 with career highs of 21 homers, 74 RBIs and an OPS of .825. The Phillies also give up their top pitching prospect in 20-year-old right-hander Sixto Sanchez, along with left-hander Will Stewart.
Outfielder Hunter Pence, catcher Devin Mesoraco and infielder Ryan Flaherty all accepted minor league contracts and invitations to spring training. Pence signed with the Rangers, Mesoraco stayed with the Mets and Flaherty hooked up with the Indians.
The Orioles have agreed to a one-year, $800,000 package with right-hander Nate Karns, who hasn't pitched since 2017. Karns missed all of last year with an elbow injury after having his 2017 season with Kansas City cut short by surgery.
Major League Baseball is changing the name of its disabled lists to injured lists. Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem says the change is being made at the suggestion of advocacy groups for the disabled, including the Link20 Network.
NFL
Cam Newton is recovering from shoulder surgery and says the most disheartening part of last season was his inability to throw deep. The Carolina Panthers quarterback says the injury left him exposed to opposing defenses, leading him to undergo arthroscopic surgery to clean out cartilage around the labrum and rotator cuff.
The Cardinals have signed cornerback Robert Alford to a three-year contract Thursday, two days after he was released by the Atlanta Falcons. The 30-year-old Alford spent six seasons with the Falcons, starting all 15 games he appeared in last season.
PGA
Phil Mickelson hit every fairway while firing a 6-under 65 in the first round of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. According to the PGA Tour, it was the seventh time Mickelson has hit every fairway in a single round and the first time since Torrey Pines 21 years ago. The accurate performance leaves him one stroke behind co-leaders Brian Gay and Scott Langley. Gay shot a 29 on the front nine at Monterey Peninsula with five straight birdies, carding five straight birdies before the turn. Jason Day and Kevin Kisner are among five players who matched Mickelson's 65.
