basketball

NBA:

The Cleveland Cavaliers are going to the NBA Finals for the fourth straight year after LeBron James delivered 35 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists in a 97-89 victory in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals at Boston. Jeff Green added 19 points while starting in place of Kevin Love, who missed the game because of a concussion suffered in Game 6. The Celtics outscored the Cavs 26-18 in the first quarter but managed just 36 points after halftime.

NHL:

Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals begins tonight when the Washington Capitals take on the Vegas Golden Knights at 8 p.m.

Indianapolis 500:

Will Power took the lead with four laps remaining and held on to capture the Indianapolis 500, giving Team Penske its 17th victory in the race. The 37-year-old Australian took the lead when Oriol Servia and Jack Harvey had to put for fuel. Power then held off pole winner Ed Carpenter to wrap up the win.

Coca Cola 600:

Kyle Busch dominated the Coca-Cola 600 to win at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the first time in his career. Busch started on the pole, led 377 of 400 laps and won every stage in NASCAR's longest race. Martin Truex Jr was second, about four seconds behind. Kevin Harvick's try for a third straight points win this month ended with an early accident.

French Open:

Defending champion Jelena Ostapenko and former champion Venus Williams were among the first-round losers at the French Open. The fifth-seeded Ostapenko became just the second defending women's champ to fall in the opening round, dropping a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Kateryna Kozlova. Williams was a first-round loser for the second straight Grand Slam, falling to Qiang Wang of China, 6-4, 7-5.

PGA:

Justin Rose claimed his ninth career PGA victory by taking the Fort Worth Invitational at Colonial by three strokes over defending U.S. Open champ Brooks Koepka. Rose closed with a 6-under 64 for a 20-under total to become the fifth player with multiple wins this season. Koepka shot 63, but had started the day four strokes behind Rose in the final group.

Paul Broadhurst shot an 8-under 63 to win the Senior PGA Championship by four strokes and match the best 72-hole score in tournament history. The 52-year-old Englishman finished at 19-under 265 at Harbor Shores for his second senior major victory. Broadhurst topped the field with 26 birdies and passed third-round co-leaders Tim Petrovic and Mark McCarron with a 4-under 31 on the back nine.

NCAA:

Haley Warden scored four goals to lead James Madison to a 16-15 victory over Boston College for the Dukes' first NCAA women's lacrosse championship. No. 3 JMU had to fend off a late rally by No. 4 BC to win a game that had been tied four times. The Eagles were led by Tess Chandler, who had four goals.

MLB:

Major League Baseball attendance is headed to its lowest average in 15 years. And it's not only because of the historically bad weather that's plagued the first third of the season. Strikeouts exceeded hits in a full calendar month for the first time in April and are on track to do so again in May. Five teams are on pace to lose 100 or more games in the same season for the first time.

Masahiro Tanaka scattered three hits over six strong innings and struck out fellow Japanese countryman Shohei Ohtani twice as the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels 3-1. Brett Gardner had three hits for New York, which won five of six against the Angels this season.

Domingo Santana's two-run double highlighted a four-run seventh for the Milwaukee Brewers, who shelled the New York Mets' battered bullpen again before holding on in the ninth for an 8-7 win. Jesus Aguilar added a three-run homer and four RBIs for the NL Central-leading Brewers, who won their fifth straight series after taking three of four games from the struggling Mets.

Pedro Martinez, Wade Boggs and Mike Lowell were among the many familiar faces at Fenway Park for a Boston Red Sox alumni game. Former stars Luis Tiant and Dwight Evans were the managers in the playful matchup before the Red Sox hosted Atlanta. Martinez pitched, and served up a home run that Julio Lugo hit off a billboard above the Green Monster. Atlanta whipped the Red Sox 7-1.

Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts was a late scratch with left side tightness for the game against the Atlanta Braves. Betts entered the day leading the major leagues with a .359 average and was tied in homers with the Angels' Mike Trout with 17. Betts also has 37 RBIs.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— The Indians pulled out a 10-9 win over the Astros on rookie Greg Allen's homer in the bottom of the 14th. Cleveland forced extra innings with a five-run ninth and tied the game again on Yonder Alonso's leadoff blast in the 13th. Allen, Alonso and Jose Ramirez drove in two runs apiece for the Indians, who still lead the AL Central by 3 ½ games over Detroit.

— The Mariners are within one game of the AL West-leading Astros after Ryon Healy doubled home a pair in the eighth to allow Seattle to complete a three-game sweep of the Twins, 3-1. Alex Colome earned a save in his first outing for Seattle. Mike Leake allowed one run in eight innings to help the Mariners win for the eighth time in nine games.

— The Tigers were 3-2 winners over the White Sox behind Blaine Hardy, who allowed a run and three hits over seven innings of his third start of the season. Hardy retired his last 14 batters and Jose Jimenez struck out the side on 12 pitches in the eighth. Dixon Machado and Nicholas Castellanos hit RBI singles in the fifth to put Detroit ahead, 3-1.

— Relievers Vidal Nuno and Austin Pruitt combined to throw 8 2/3 scoreless innings as the Rays roughed up the Orioles, 8-3. Nuno worked out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the third and gave up three hits and four walks over three scoreless innings. Brad Miller laced a two-run double and a solo homer to finish with three RBIs.

— Jason Hammel fanned 10 while scattering four hits over 5 1/3 shutout innings of the Royals' 5-3 win at Texas. Salvador Perez and Drew Butera each homered off Cole Hamels, who allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings. Kelvin Herrera pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 11th save in 12 chances.

— Toronto's 5-3 win at Philadelphia prevented the Phillies from stretching their half-game lead over the Braves in the NL East. Devon Travis and Dwight Smith Jr. each hit two-run doubles and Curtis Granderson added a solo homer that capped the scoring. J.A. Happ is 7-3 after yielding two earned runs and six hits over 6 2/3s against his former team.

— The Nationals beat the Marlins for the 11th straight time as Bryce Harper hit his NL-leading 16th home run in a 5-2 win at Miami. Harper also lifted a sacrifice fly and Anthony Rendon went deep to support Stephen Strasburg's five shutout innings. Strasburg also had an RBI for Washington, which is within one game of first place the NL East.

— Carlos Gonzalez had a season-high four hits, including a third-deck homer off Matt Harvey as the Rockies thumped the Reds, 8-2 to move 1 ½ games ahead of Arizona for first place in the NL West. David Dahl, Nolan Arenado and Ian Desmond also homered for Colorado, which won a home series for only the second time this season. Harvey gave up four runs and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings in his first loss with Cincinnati.

— The Diamondbacks lost for the 15th time in 17 games as Matt Chapman's RBI single in the sixth broke a 1-1 deadlock in Oakland's 2-1 victory over Arizona. Jonathan Lucroy homered for the first time this season and rookie Frankie Montas pitched three-hit ball over six innings in his first start with Oakland. The Diamondbacks' steep slide has turned them into a .500 ballclub followed a 24-11 start.

— Jesus Aguilar launched a three-run homer and had four RBIs in the Brewers' third straight win over the Mets, 8-7. Milwaukee trailed 6-4 before scoring four times in the seventh, capped by Domingo Santana's two-run double. The Brewers' sixth win in seven games gives them a four-game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central.

— The Cardinals used a three-run eighth to beat the Pirates, 6-4, dropping Pittsburgh five games off the NL Central lead. Pinch-hitter Harrison Bader tied it with an RBI single off Felipe Vazquez, who walked Yairo Munoz on four pitches to bring in the go-ahead run. Jedd Gyorko (JUR'-koh) hit a two-run single and Matt Carpenter went 2-for-4 to raise his average to .422 since May 16.

— Javier Baez belted a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the fourth inning and the Cubs received 6 1/3 scoreless innings from their bullpen in an 8-3 win against the Giants. Albert Almora Jr. was 3-for-5 with an RBI double and two runs scored to help Chicago erase an early 3-0 deficit. The Cubs are 4 ½ games off the NL Central lead after taking two of three from San Francisco.

— Rookie Walker Buehler tied a career high with eight strikeouts in the Dodgers' eighth victory in 10 games, 6-1 over the Padres. Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger homered in a four-run eighth to back Buehler, who allowed one run on four hits in seven innings.

Burlington City Marathon:
