MLB NEWS

Carlos Beltran has interviewed to become manager of the New York Yankees, four weeks after the final game of his 20-year major league career. The 40-year-old Beltran was a nine-time All-Star and played for the Yankees from 2014-16.

NBA SCHEDULE

Reggie Jackson scored 23 points and the Detroit Pistons beat the Phoenix Suns 131-107 for their third straight victory.

Tobias Harris and Avery Bradley each scored 20 points on Wednesday, and Andre Drummond had 13 points and matched a career best with seven assists in Detroit's highest-scoring game of the season.

Other finals around the league:

— After struggling from long range all night, Stephen Curry hit two quick 3-pointers to open overtime and the Golden State Warriors outlasted the Los Angeles Lakers 127-123. The victory prevented the Warriors from losing two straight games for the first time this season.

— Ben Simmons scored 31 points, grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds and overcame the Hack-a-Shaq strategy, leading the Philadelphia 76ers to a 118-113 victory over the Washington Wizards. Joel Embiid had 25 points and 14 rebounds, and Dario Saric added 24 points to help the Sixers win for the sixth time in eight games.

— Aaron Gordon had 40 points and 15 rebounds to help the Orlando Magic end a nine-game losing streak with a 121-108 victory over the struggling Oklahoma City Thunder. Russell Westbrook hit five 3-pointers and scored 20 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter for the Thunder, who lost for the fifth time in six games and dropped their seventh straight on the road.

— Kyle Lowry scored a season-high 36 points, DeMar DeRozan had 30 and the Toronto Raptors improved to 7-1 at home by beating the shorthanded Charlotte Hornets 126-113. Lowry shot 12 for 18 and set a career-high by connecting on eight of his 11 3-point attempts. Dwight Howard had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who lost their seventh straight road game and dropped to 1-9 away from home. Charlotte's All-Star guard Kemba Walker was out of the game because of a bruised left shoulder.

— Enes Kanter had 22 points and 14 rebounds, and the New York Knicks beat the Miami Heat 115-86 despite losing Kristaps Porzingis to a sprained right ankle after 2 1/2 minutes. Back after missing three games with back spasms, Kanter had his way against a Heat team missing starting center Hassan Whiteside because of left knee soreness, going 7 of 9 from the field.

— James Harden had 29 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds and the Houston Rockets rolled past the Indiana Pacers 118-97 for their sixth straight win. Thaddeus Young cut the lead to 10 with a hook shot with about eight minutes left. The Rockets then put the game away with a 16-4 run that made it 110-88 with about four minutes left.

— Andrew Wiggins scored 28 points to help the Minnesota Timberwolves beat New Orleans 120-102 in a game that saw Pelicans forward Anthony Davis ejected for the first time in his career. Jimmy Butler and Gorgui Dieng had 19 points each for the Timberwolves, who are 13-9.

— DeMarre Carroll scored 15 of his 22 points in the third quarter to help the Brooklyn Nets beat the Dallas Mavericks 109-104. Trevor Booker had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Spencer Dinwidde added 19 points, and Caris Levert had 13.

— LaMarcus Aldridge set his San Antonio high with 41 points and the Spurs spoiled J.B. Bickerstaff's debut as Memphis coach, beating the Grizzlies 104-95 to hand them their ninth straight loss. Aldridge established a season best for the second consecutive game, topping his 33-point outing Monday against Dallas.

NBA-NEWS

The Grizzlies say injured point guard Mike Conley will be out another two to three weeks.

The team says Conley is progressing with therapy and treatment on his sore left heel and Achilles tendon.

Conley has been out since Nov. 13, and the Grizzlies announced Nov. 17 the guard would not play while his injuries heal.

NHL SCHEDULE

Charlie McAvoy and Riley Nash scored first-period goals, Tuukaa Rask made 19 saves to snap his four-game losing streak and the Boston Bruins hung on for a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Torey Krug also scored and Brad Marchand assisted on the first two goals for the Bruins, who opened a 3-0 lead to post their fifth win in six games. Boston improved to 13-3 in its last 16 at home against the Lightning.

Checking out other NHL finals:

Vermette snapped an 11-game scoreless drought with his first multigoal game since Nov. 25, 2015.

— Nathan MacKinnon scored a power-play goal 59 seconds into overtime after he had a goal waved off 30 seconds earlier, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2. MacKinnon celebrated with his teammates when his shot hit a Jets player and went into the net 29 seconds into the extra period. But replay showed that Colorado was offside.

— Carey Price made 25 saves to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators for their third straight win. Jonathan Drouin and Phillip Danault scored in the second period for Montreal. Price improved to 3-0-0 while allowing just two goals on 100 shots since he returned last week after missing 10 games with a lower body injury.

NFL-NEWS

The co-owner of the New York Giants says there was probably a better way for the team to handle the benching of two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning after 13 seasons.

Speaking for the first time since coach Ben McAdoo announced Tuesday that Geno Smith would start against Oakland, John Mara said Wednesday that he made a couple of mistakes in handling the situation.

Not being at the team's headquarters Tuesday when Manning was devastated by the decision topped the list.

In other NFL news:

— Quarterback Jay Cutler is out of the concussion protocol and will start when the Miami Dolphins try to break a five-game losing streak Sunday against Denver.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady sat out practice Wednesday with what the team says is an Achilles tendon injury. The 40-year-old missed one practice last week prior to the Patriots' win over Miami with the same Achilles tendon injury.

— Falcons running back Devonta Freeman, the league's highest paid running back, has cleared the concussion protocol after missing two games and could return for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings.

The New York Giants have placed cornerback Janoris Jenkins on injured reserve. He will have ankle surgery.

— The Chicago Bears are bringing back linebacker Lamarr Houston, claiming him off waivers from the Houston Texans.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-NEWS

No. 7 Miami has taken another big injury hit, losing wide receiver Ahmmon Richards for the remainder of the season after he injured his left knee in practice Wednesday.

Richards has a meniscus injury. That news came less than a week after the Hurricanes, who are 10-1, lost starting tight end Christopher Herndon IV, also to a season-ending knee injury.

Miami plays No. 1 Clemson in Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conference championship game.

MLB NEWS

Former Seattle Mariners second baseman Bret Boone caused a stir on social media by making light of sexual harassment in a message to a reporter.

Seattlepi.com reporter Stephen Cohen wrote Wednesday that after he tweeted about his disappointment in the allegations against radio host Garrison Keillor, Boone sent him a direct message on Twitter. Boone wrote that he got sexually harassed "twice today," when "the Starbucks girl" smiled at him and when a woman at a drug store flirted with him.

Boone further joked that he was getting a lawyer and that the behavior was unacceptable.

Boone said he was tired of people being offended and that the reporter should go back to his politically correct world.

AUSTRALIAN PGA

Sergio Garcia withstood two rain delays at Royal Pines for a 5-under 67 and the clubhouse lead at the Australian PGA Championship.

The Masters champion, starting on the 10th hole Thursday and in the same 6:10 a.m. group as Adam Scott, had three birdies over his final seven holes.

Australians Rhein Gibson, Greg Chalmers and Stephen Dartnall shot 68s, with most of the morning rounds completed.

Scott, playing with a long-handled putter, was 1-over through 16 holes before making birdie on his final two for a 71. Scott used a broomstick putter when he won the Masters in 2013 but switched to a short putter after a ban on anchoring the putter against the body began in 2016.

Marc Leishman and defending champion Harold Varner III had afternoon starts.
