Sports Report: Royals Top Mets 7-2 To Win World Series

MLB:

The resilient and relentless Kansas City Royals are World Series champions for the first time in 30 years -- thanks to Christian Colon. His pinch-hit RBI tiebreaking single keyed a five-run rally in the top of the 12th inning in the Royals come-from-behind 7-2 victory over the New York Mets to win the World Series in five games.

NFL:

In the third-highest scoring game in NFL history, the New Orleans Saints beat the New York Giants 52-49. Meanwhile Oakland topped the Jets 34-20, Seattle bested Dallas 13-12, Denver won against Green Bay 29-10, Kansas City blasted Detroit 45-10, Arizona defeated Cleveland 34-20, Cincinnati trumped Pittsburgh 16-10, Minnesota slid past Chicago 23-20, Baltimore edged San Diego 29-26, St. Louis beat San Francisco 27-6, and it was Tampa Bay over Atlanta in overtime 23-20.

The Cincinnati Bengals are 7-0 for the first time in franchise history.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick says he's not commenting on reports that the New York Jets had their locker room swept for listening devices when they visited New England. The Boston Herald reports the Jets asked the NFL to sweep the visiting locker room for bugs before their October 25th game at Gillette Stadium. The newspaper also says three Patriots employees were questioned before the game.

On Monday Night Football, Indianapolis is in Carolina to face the Panthers at 8:30.

NBA:

In the NBA, San Antonio bested Boston 95-87, Atlanta beat Charlotte 94-92, Toronto topped Milwaukee 106-87, Oklahoma City won against Denver 117-93, Chicago topped Orlando 92-87, and it was Dallas over the Lakers 103-93.

NHL:

In the NHL, Buffalo beat the Islanders 2-1, Montreal won against Winnipeg 5-1, Tampa Bay edged Carolina 4-3, San Jose skated past Colorado 4-3, and it was Anaheim over Nashville 4-2.

NASCAR:

Jeff Gordon earned an automatic berth in NASCAR's championship race — where he'll try to win a fifth title in his final season — with a victory Sunday at Martinsville Speedway. Matt Kenseth intentionally wrecked Joey Logano — payback from an incident three races ago — to take the race leader out with 47 laps remaining.

MLS:

The New York Red Bulls beat D.C. United 1-0 yesterday in the first leg of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. Dax McCarty scored in the 72nd minute. After a foul by United's Taylor Kemp, Sacha Kljestan's long free kick found McCarty 3 yards out and McCarty's header eluded goalkeeper Bill Hamid.

NCAA:

The Atlantic Coast Conference has suspended the officiating crew that worked the Miami-Duke game for two league games for "a series of errors" on the final play. The league announced the decision about 13 hours after the Hurricanes threw a combined eight laterals before Corn Elder took the last one for the game-ending touchdown that beat Duke 30-27. In a statement announcing the suspension of the on-field crew, the replay official and the communicator, Commissioner John Swofford said that final play "was not handled appropriately."

Missouri suspended junior quarterback Maty Mauk for the rest of the season for disciplinary reasons, just six days after reinstating him. The 4-4 Tigers play 24th-ranked Mississippi State on Thursday night at home. The school said in a news release that it will not discuss further details of Mauk's suspension. The first suspension was for a violation of program policies.

F1:

Pole-sitter Nico Rosberg of Mercedes won the first Mexican Grand Prix since 1992 for his fourth victory of the season. He also gained a sliver of satisfaction in defeating teammate Lewis Hamilton, who has beaten him to the season championship the past two years.

Hamilton finished second, losing his bid to tie the Formula One record of 13 season victories. He has 10 with two races left. The victory pushed Rosberg into second place in the driver standings ahead of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who failed to finish the race after a crash.

PGA:

Justin Thomas overcame a double bogey on the 14th and some nervous moments on the final hole to win the CIMB Classic for his first PGA Tour title. The 22-year-old American holed a 6-foot par putt on the par-5 18th for a one-stroke victory over Australian star Adam Scott. Thomas shot a 6-under 66 for a tournament-record finish of 26-under. Thomas, who had a course-record 61 in the second round, seemed to have blown his chances when he hit into the water at 14, but immediately rallied with three consecutive birdies to take the outright lead.

Duffy Waldorf, who came close to shooting the second 59 in Champions Tour history yesterday in the second round of the Champions Tour Toshiba Classic in California, won the tournament with a 20-under overall. Waldorf shot a final round 5-under 66. He finished one shot ahead of Joe Durant for his first Champions Tour victory.

LPGA:

South Korea's Sei Young Kim made a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th for a one-stroke victory in the LPGA in China. The 22-year-old won for the third time in her rookie season on the LPGA Tour, closing with a 2-under 70 for a 2-under finish. Third-ranked Stacy Lewis, fellow American Kim Kaufman and Taiwan's Candie Kung finished a stroke back.
