Sports Report: Four New Players Join Hall Of Fame Alum

Baseball Hall of Fame

MLB:

The Baseball Hall of Fame will have four new members this summer -- pitchers Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz and infielder Craig Biggio. Once again failing to gain the necessary 75 percent of the vote were steroid era stars Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, none of whom got more than half the necessary backing.

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press on condition of anonymity that infielder Stephen Drew and the New York Yankees are working to finalize a $5 million, one-year contract. The agreement also contains performance bonuses. The deal is subject to a physical.

NBA:

In the NBA, Phoenix beat Milwaukee 102-96, and it was Detroit over San Antonio 105-104.

NHL:

Over on the ice, New Jersey bested Buffalo 4-1, Vancouver edged the Islanders 3-2, Tampa Bay doubled up Montreal 4-2, Nashville defeated Carolina 3-2, Philadelphia skated by Ottawa in shootout 2-1, St. Louis blanked Arizona 6-0, Columbus topped Dallas 4-2, Colorado shut out Chicago 2-0, Detroit doubled up Edmonton 4-2, and it was San Jose over Minnesota in overtime 4-3.

The New York Rangers are sending teenage forward Anthony Duclair back to the junior league Quebec Remparts. The 19-year-old Duclair was assigned to Quebec yesterday, one day after he and Team Canada won the gold medal at the World Junior Championship. During the tournament, Duclair had four goals and four assists in seven games.

NCAA:

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Athletic Director Jim Knowlton has resigned to take an Athletic Director job with the United States Air Force Academy.

Top-ranked Kentucky is still unbeaten -- but the Wildcats got a scare en route to winning their 14th straight game. Aaron Harrison scored 26 points, including two big free throws with 1:29 remaining in overtime to put Kentucky ahead to stay in its 89-86 victory over upset-minded Mississippi.

Iona defeated Quinnipiac 81-73 last night. David Laury tied his career high with 30 points, and Isiah Williams added 22 for Iona. Zaid Hearst led Quinnipiac with 27 points — his second game scoring more than 25 points in two games this month. Aryon Hutton added 15.
