NBA:
In the NBA playoffs, Cleveland beat Detroit 106-101, Miami bested Charlotte 123-91, San Antonio topped Memphis 106-74, and it was the Clippers over Portland 115-95.
Boston Celtics guard Avery Bradley is likely out for the rest of the opening-round playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks. Bradley went down with a severely strained right hamstring in Boston's Game 1 loss. Coach Brad Stevens says Bradley is definitely out for Game 2 on Tuesday.
The Brooklyn Nets have hired Hawks assistant Kenny Atkinson as their new coach. The Hawks went to the playoffs in each of Atkinson's four seasons as their assistant. He was a New York Knicks assistant before coming to Atlanta. Atkinson will remain with the Hawks through their playoff run.
NHL:
In the NHL playoffs, St. Louis edged Chicago 3-2 to take a 2-1 series lead, Detroit blanked Tampa Bay 2-0 the Lightning lead the series 2-1, the Islanders won against Florida in overtime 4-3 to lead the series 2-1, and it was Nashville over Anaheim 3-2 to lead the series 2-0.
MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, the Yankees beat Seattle 4-3, Toronto bested Boston 5-3, Houston edged Detroit 5-4, Minnesota topped the Angels 3-2 in 12 innings, Oakland slid past Kansas City 3-2, and Tampa Bay beat the White Sox 3-2.
In the National League, Atlanta beat Miami 6-5 in 10 innings, Pittsburgh tripled up Milwaukee 9-3, Philadelphia edged Washington 3-2 in 10 innings, St. Louis slid past Cincinnati 4-3, Colorado blanked the Cubs 2-0, Arizona bested San Diego 7-3, and it was the Dodgers over San Francisco 3-1.
In interleague play, the Mets shut out Cleveland 6-0.
Boston Marathon:
More than 30,000 runners converge on Hopkinton this morning to run in today's Boston Marathon. This will mark the 120th year for the race. Since the bombings three years ago, there is more security along with a larger field of runners but the focus has largely returned to the race itself.
Meanwhile Twenty U.S. military veterans wounded in action in Iraq and Afghanistan will face a new battle: reaching the finish line of the Boston Marathon. The veterans will attempt to cover all 26.2 miles of today's race as part of the Freedom Team. The effort is sponsored by the group Achilles International, which helps disabled vets take on physical challenges such as marathons.
Defending Boston Marathan champion Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia -- who also won the race three years ago -- is running today's race. Women's winner Carolina Rotich of Kenya also is running, as are defending wheelchair champions Tatyana McFadden and Marcel Hug. Most of the top American runners will sit out the race after running the Olympic trials in Los Angeles in February.
MLS:
The New England Revolution tied Orlando City 2-2 yesterday. Lee Nguyen scored on a penalty kick in the 96th minute for the Revolution to tie it up. Kevin Molino had put Orlando City in front in the 92nd minute with a low close-range blast. The Revs take on D.C. United next Saturday.
NASCAR:
Carl Edwards completed a dominating effort when he took off on the final restart to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway. The pole-sitter led 276 of 500 laps on the half-mile track. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was second, followed by Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott and Trevor Bayne. Defending series champ and points leader Kyle Busch's quest for a third straight Sprint Cup win came to an end when he wrecked on the 259th lap.
Indycar:
Simon Pagenaud held off a challenge from Scott Dixon to win the Grand Prix of Long Beach. It's Pagenaud's fifth IndyCar victory.
Golf:
South Africa's Brandon Grace had five birdies on the front side en route to a 5-under 66 to win the RBC Heritage tournament. It was Grace's first win on the PGA tour and his 11th worldwide. Grace finished 9-under par for a two-shot win over Luke Donald and Russell Knox. It's Donald's sixth top-three finish since 2009 at Harbour Town.
Woody Austin tied the Mitsubishi Electric Classic record with an 8-under 64 and beat Wes Short Jr. with a par on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. The 52-year-old Austin has two victories in the last three events on the Champions Tour. Short could have avoided the playoff, but he missed a 6-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to tie Austin at 11-under.
Tennis:
Rafael Nadal beat Frenchman Gael Monfils 7-5, 5-7, 6-love to win the Monte Carlo Masters for the ninth time. This was the Spaniard's first tournament win in Monte Carlo since winning the last of his eight straight titles there in 2012. It is also the record-equaling 28th Masters title for Nadal, bringing him alongside top-ranked Novak Djokovic.
