Boston Marathon:
Grey skies are expected for today's Boston Marathon, but onlookers will be cheering nonetheless. Some 30,000 runners are expected to take part in the second Boston Marathon since bombs went off near the finish line in 2013, killing three people and wounding another 260. Tom Grilk, the executive director of the Boston Athletic Association, says, "What happened in 2013 was the closest and perhaps most poignant part of our history, but part of the history."
A field of 30,000 runners gathers in Hopkinton this morning for the Boston Marathon -- the second edition of the race since the deadly 2013 bombings. Meb Keflezighi is back to defend his win in the race last year, the first win by an American since 1983. The weather along the course is expected to be wet, with showers in the forecast.
Boston Marathon, women's start at 9:32 a.m., men's at 10 a.m.
NHL:
In the NHL Playoffs, the Islanders edged Washington in overtime 2-1, Chicago doubled up Nashville 4-2, Montreal skated by Ottawa in overtime 2-1, and it was Calgary over Vancouver 4-2.
NBA:
In the NBA Playoffs, Cleveland topped Boston 113-100, Atlanta bested Brooklyn 99-92, Memphis beat Portland 100-86, and it was the Clippers over San Antonio 107-92.
MLB:
In baseball, in interleague play, Atlanta topped Toronto 5-2.
In the American League, the Yankees beat Tampa Bay 5-3, Baltimore bested Boston 8-3 and the Red Sox will take on Baltimore this morning in Boston at 11:05 for the annual Patriots Day game, Detroit routed the White Sox 9-1, Minnesota defeated Cleveland 7-2, Houston slid past the Angels 4-3, Kansas City doubled up Oakland 4-2, and it was Seattle over Texas 11-10.
In the National League, the Mets edged Miami 7-6, Pittsburgh won against Milwaukee 5-2, Washington topped Philadelphia 4-1, San Diego bested the Cubs 5-2, Arizona beat San Francisco 5-1, the Dodgers blanked Colorado 7-0, and it was St. Louis over Cincinnati 2-1.
NFL:
Tim Tebow is expected to sign a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday. That's according to three people familiar with the deal. Tebow hasn't played in the NFL since 2012 with the New York Jets.
Golf:
Jim Furyk birdied the second playoff hole to win the RBC Heritage, ending his five-year victory drought on the PGA Tour. Furyk finished tied with Kevin Kisner at 18 under par after firing an 8-under 63.
Kisner posted a 64.
Tennis:
Top-ranked Novak Djokovic has won the Monte Carlo Masters by defeating sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. It's the second time Djokovic has won the title in three years. In extending his winning streak to 17 matches, Djokovic becomes the first player in tennis history to win the first three Masters tournament of the year after completing the Indian Wells-Miami sweep this spring.
NASCAR:
Pole-sitter Matt Kenseth ended a 51-race losing streak by holding off Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon to win the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Kenseth led for just 47 laps yet came out on top in a race that had 21 lead changes and 11 cautions totaling 117 laps.
The race went 11 laps past the scheduled 500 because of a quick rain shower, the fourth weather delay of the day. Instead of calling it, NASCAR parked the cars on pit road and quickly dried the track for a two-lap overtime sprint.
The race got underway 78 minutes late due to the weather, but only 23 laps were completed before the skies opened again to cause a four-hour delay. During the brief bit of racing, Brad Keselowski spun into Penske teammate Joey Logano, heavily damaging both cars.
Just 37 cars finished the race, including 13 on the lead lap in the crash-filled event.
Denny Hamlin pulled out of the because of a neck strain that worsened during the second rain delay. Hamlin said he felt something strain in his neck 12 laps into the race.
