A winter storm warning is posted for western and northern New York as the National Weather Service predicts heavy snow and possible icy conditions beginning this evening.

Forecasters predict 5 to 8 inches of snow in Buffalo and Niagara County, and 6 to 12 inches in the northern Adirondacks and St. Lawrence Valley. The storm warning runs from this evening through Wednesday.

A winter storm watch is posted for central New York, and heavy rain is expected in the Hudson Valley from Poughkeepsie to Glens Falls.

In the storm watch area, a mix of heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain is forecast across the Southern Tier including Binghamton, Ithaca and Elmira. Forecasters say there could be 4 to 8 inches of snow and up to a quarter inch of ice.
