Smoking Ban Comes To NY Playgrounds

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation banning smoking at playgrounds.

The bill was sponsored by Democratic Assemblywoman Sandy Galef and Senator David Carlucci, an Independent Democrat. They say the law bans smoking at public playgrounds where children under age twelve are present during the hours between sunrise and sunset. They say the legislation would not prevent local municipalities from enacting or applying more rigorous anti-smoking policies. The Westchester County coordinator of POW’R Against Tobacco says the law is a positive step towards reducing secondhand smoke exposure and creating healthier communities. Galef says playgrounds should be looked to as places that promote healthy living and positive choices for children.
