Sloop Clearwater To Return To Hudson River

Courtesy of Clearwater

The sloop Clearwater is being readied for a return to the Hudson River after a winter of restoration work.

Folk legend Pete Seeger helped dream up the Clearwater in the 1960s as symbol of efforts to rid pollution from the Hudson River.

Workers in Kingston this winter stripped planks off part of the hull and replaced parts of the sloop's frame.

The sloop will be taken by barge to Albany, where it will be lowered into the river to allow the new planks to swell. Then the Clearwater will head back to its Kingston homeport to get ready for a summer of sailing the river.

Forty-seven years after its christening, about 500,000 people have set foot on the Clearwater, many children on class trips.
