New York’s senior U.S. Senator says an important piece of art history has been discovered in Greene County. Charles Schumer asked Wednesday morning for more than half a million dollars in grants to restore the art.

Schumer was to be at the Thomas Cole Historical site in the Village of Catskill at 10:30. His office says the site needs funding to protect a recent discovery: that the Hudson River School great also painted decorative friezes in two of the rooms of his house circa 1836.

Those paintings weren’t documented and were painted over around 1900.

Schumer will ask the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services for grants to cover the restoration project.
