Schumer Demands Answers Re: Proposed Utility Merger

WAMC/Allison Dunne

New York’s senior U.S. senator was in Orange and Ulster Counties Friday saying he will not support a proposed utility merger unless questions are answered.

Democratic Senator Charles Schumer is calling on the New York State Public Service Commission to extend the public comment period and hold an evidentiary hearing in relation to a proposed merger between Poughkeepsie-based CH Energy Group and Canadian Energy Company Fortis. The PSC had extended for 30 days, till May 1, the original comment period. Schumer says the proposed deal has raised serious concerns, including storm preparedness, renewable energy investment, and rate hikes.

Also Friday, Fortis CFO Barry Perry, along with Central Hudson executives, met with the editorial board of the "Poughkeepsie Journal," saying the deal is a good fit, and Central Hudson would be operated as a stand-alone company.
