U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is urging the Federal Emergency Management Agency to be ready to approve financial assistance for the wildfire in Sullivan and Ulster Counties that has been burning since Sunday.

New York’s senior U.S. senator has written to FEMA urging readiness to expedite approval for fire management assistance grants to help reimburse Hudson Valley communities for firefighting at the Shawungunk Ridge State Forest. Schumer says county officials are assessing the level of threat and cost of this still-ongoing disaster to see if it meets the criteria needed for federal support. If so, Schumer is requesting FEMA be ready to quickly approve this declaration for the affected area in Ulster and Sullivan Counties, along with any other counties impacted, if they qualify. The fire began in Mamakating, in Sullivan County, Sunday.
