Schenectady Mayor Seeks Interim Police Chief

City of Schenectady

Schenectady is officially seeking an interim police chief.

The electric city hasn't had a police chief at the head of the 139-officer force since the end of October when Brian Kilcullen retired to take over the force in Rutland, Vt.  Mayor Gary McCarthy tells the Daily Gazette he's planning to interview eligible candidates for chief along with Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett to make an interim appointment “sometime in the near future.” He adds he's not in any rush. A civil service exam for the position of chief is to be given in March.  Bennett says the open competitive exam would be available for officers in adjacent counties — Albany, Saratoga, Montgomery and Schoharie. McCarthy has expressed hope the next chief would live in the city, but that's not written in stone.

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief. Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. Prior to that he hosted talk shows on WYJB and WROW, including the 1999 series of overnight radio broadcasts tracking the JonBenet Ramsey murder case with a cast of callers and characters from all over the world via the internet. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.
