Authorities say several people remain unaccounted for after fire gutted two five-story apartment buildings in Schenectady and left seven people injured, including a man who jumped from a top floor.

They didn't have a specific number for the missing people but say 60 have been displaced.

Emergency officials tell local media that the fire broke out around 2 a.m. Friday in a building across from city hall. The flames spread next door. Both buildings have commercial space on the ground floor and apartments above.

Firefighters continued during the day to hose down smoldering debris in single-digit temperatures.

Officials say some of the seven people hospitalized have serious injuries, including a man who jumped from a fifth-floor apartment and a person taken to the burn unit at Westchester Medical Center.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
