Saratoga County Man Shot Dead In Standoff With Police

Authorities say law enforcement officers have shot and killed a distraught man who pointed a shotgun at them during a standoff at an upstate New York home.

Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo says deputies and state troopers were called late Monday night for a report of a man threatening to harm himself at a home in the town of Edinburg, in the southern Adirondacks 40 miles northwest of Albany.

Zurlo says officers spoke with Richard LaPort for about 40 minutes. The sheriff says during that time LaPort fired a 12-gauge shotgun into the air four times before leveling the weapon at the officers.

Zurlo says some of the officers then opened fire, killing LaPort.

The three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. The shooting remains under investigation.
