Sanders Decries Proposed Budget Cuts

During a budget committee hearing on Wednesday ranking member Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders railed at business leaders who are suggesting program cuts for the poor to help balance the budget.

A panel of witnesses representing  corporate interests and the Business Roundtable testified before the Senate budget committee on Wednesday.

Sanders, the ranking member,  expects Republicans to propose substantial cuts to low income programs and huge tax breaks for the wealthy, characterizing it  as the Robin Hood principle in reverse.  "We have people who are getting a retirement benefit of over $88,000 a month coming here telling us that we should cut Social Security benefits for elderly people in Vermont who are trying to live on $14,000 a year.  That is advice that this senator will not accept.”

Republicans are expected to reveal their budget plans next week.
