The member of the Housatonic River Initiative who is canoeing his way across Massachusetts to raise awareness of the importance of clean water is expected to arrive in Pittsfield Monday.Denny Alsop left the Connecticut border March 21st to repeat a journey he made in 1988. Aside from some cold temperatures, a little misdirection and some chipped paint, the 69-year-old and his canoe are working their way up the Housatonic River.

“I’ll be getting up to the main impound of PCBs on the rest of the river which is Woods Pond,” Alsop said. “I certainly hope to be there Sunday morning. From there it’ll be a pretty straight shot into Pittsfield.

The trip comes as General Electric and the Environmental Protection Agency are at odds over cleanup plans for the Housatonic River.

Alsop plans to hold an event at Pittsfield’s Fred Garner Park at 11 a.m. Monday.
