Replicas of two famous ships will arrive in the Hudson Valley Thursday morning. Allison Dunne has more.
Replicas of the Nina and the Pinta will arrive in Newburgh around 11 Thursday morning. The replicas sail into port courtesy of The Columbus Foundation, whose aim is to educate the public on the type of ship, or the "caravel", that Christopher Columbus used when he came across a new world in 1492. The Nina is an exact replica. The Pinta was built 15 feet longer and 8 feet wider than the original, so she can accommodate more people. A Santa Maria replica is not among the Nina and Pinta because the Santa Maria was a different type of ship, and would require water depths twice those of the Nina and Pinta, and be unable to travel to many places where the other two ships visit. The two replica ships will be docked at the Riverfront Marina on Front Street in Newburgh through the weekend. The next and last New York stop is Rochester.
