To Promote Public Art, The Mayor Takes A Public Piano Lesson

Mayors will do almost anything to promote their city, as one western Massachusetts municipal leader demonstrated Wednesday.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno with piano teacher Sofya Shainskaya performed a brief concert to help promote a public art project by the Springfield Central Cultural District.

Street pianos have been placed downtown that passersby, regardless of musical ability, are invited to play.

The cultural district has hired professional musicians to play the pianos at lunchtime. An anonymous donor sponsored an hour with the stipulation the mayor be the musician.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
