Albany, NY – In today's Academic Minute, Columbia University Journalism School professor Helen Benedict describes the shocking relationship between the military and sexual abuse.

Helen Benedict is the author of The Lonely Soldier: The Private War of Women in Iraq. Her work on women soldiers won the 2010 Ken Book Award and the 2008 James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism.

A novelist and journalist who focuses on social justice, Benedict has worked as a newspaper feature writer in London and California, has written for magazines including The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, Poets & Writers, and The Women's Review of Books, and is widely anthologized. She has received fellowships from Yaddo, MacDowell, the Virginia Center of the Arts, and the Freedom Forum.
