Power Project Developers Answer Vermont Questions

TDI New England

Developers of project to bring a 1,000-megawatt power line down Lake Champlain and across Vermont  answered questions about residents concerned about how the underwater portion of the cable could affect the lake.

Officials with the $1.2 billion New England Clean Power Link project spoke Thursday at the ECHO Center in Burlington, assuring residents that the cable would not throw off electromagnetic waves that might disturb or harm lake-dwelling creatures.

Christopher Kilian, director of the Conservation Law Foundation in Vermont, told the Burlington Free Press he remains concerned about how it would stir up sediment, particularly when it comes to mercury. He says the ingestion of mercury by increasingly larger organisms concentrates its potency in some of the lake's most popular deep-water fish.
