Police Fatally Shoot A Man Near I-84 In Dutchess

Authorities say a man who had carjacked a vehicle in Dutchess County was shot and killed by police after he threatened them with a knife.

It happened at about 3:30 Thursday afternoon just off I-84 near Exit 11 in the City of Beacon. State police say Beacon police officers pursued the unidentified suspect after he carjacked the vehicle at knifepoint at Memorial Park. Police say the man abandoned the vehicle and was chased on foot through a wooded area and across the highway before being shot by police when he threatened them with a large knife. It wasn't clear how many officers were involved. A portion of the highway was closed for hours as authorities investigated the shooting, causing a two-mile long traffic backup.
