Schenectady's planning commission has approved zoning changes that will help pave the way for construction of the new $330 million dollar Rivers Casino project.
The panel met Wednesday night, giving the go-ahead for development by changing rules to allow casino developers to put up buildings as high as 110 feet and 20 square feet of signage at the former Alco site, between Erie Boulevard and the Mohawk River.
111th district assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara:
"We're looking at a significant investment in an upstate city in the region. We're turning this area into a destination."
The City Council will hold a public hearing Jan. 26 on the Planning Commission's recommendations. The council will vote sometime next month.
