PFOA And PFOS Found In Groundwater At VT Landfill

PFOA formula

Vermont officials say suspected cancer causing chemicals have been found in groundwater at a closed landfill in Shaftsbury.

Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin said Wednesday that the Department of Environmental Conservation will contact residents with private drinking water wells within a quarter mile of the site to have their wells tested.

He said the groundwater testing results show a PFOA concentration of 25 parts per trillion in one monitoring well tested. The state's combined health advisory limit for PFOA and PFOS is 20 parts per trillion. More monitoring wells at the landfill are expected to be tested in the coming weeks.

The state says bottled water will be supplied to residents until test results on private drinking water wells are received.

The landfill was owned and operated by the town.
