Open Forum: St. Patrick's Day

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, a celebration of Irish heritage worldwide. Here in the United States however, it has become a troublesome holiday for authorities looking to crack down on drunken revelry, and a frustrating day for the LGBT community, which has long been excluded from official celebrations.

Why has this holiday made so many headlines? How has it gotten so far from a simple celebration of Irish heritage? And why in this day an age of legal same-sex marriage, are LGBT groups being excluded still from the largest parades in the country?
