The No. 2 person at Vermont's state Transportation Agency says there's lots of uncertainty surrounding an Obama administration announcement of $253 million in federal transportation funding for the state during the next six years.

The U.S Department of Transportation issued an announcement on Monday, trumpeting the funding as the answer to America's crumbling infrastructure. Nationwide, it calls for $478 billion in funding over the next six years.

But Chris Cole, Vermont's deputy transportation secretary, says state officials will have to dig through hundreds of pages of detail before determining how the new funding stream dovetails with federal support for other transportation programs.

Another big uncertainty is what the Republican Congress will do with a Democratic administration's proposal.
