A New York state senator has introduced legislation to combat hate speech on social media.

Democratic state Senator David Carlucci authored the Social Media Hate Speech Accountability Act to put in place best practices that social media companies and other online platforms must follow when handling complaints about hate speech. The legislation requires that the platform remove hate speech within 24 hours after a complaint has been reported. If the platform does not, the state attorney general can take action against the provider, and seek up to $1 million for a violation. On Sunday, Carlucci introduced legislation to create a domestic terrorism law. Carlucci’s 38th District includes Monsey in Rockland County, where a machete attack inside a rabbi’s home occurred during a December Hanukkah celebration.
