A Hudson Valley state senator and Manhattan assemblymember say it’s time to remove sales tax from feminine hygiene products.  Republican State Senator Sue Serino and Democratic Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal announced Thursday that they worked on legislation that would exempt feminine hygiene products, such as tampons, from the state sales and compensating use tax. Serino says, “To consider that we exempt cupcakes and circus performances from the sales tax in New York State, but not feminine hygiene products, is beyond comprehension.” Rosenthal says tampons are not a luxury item and the tampon tax is a regressive tax on women and their bodies. Both the senate and assembly bills have five co-sponsors each, and the assembly bill also has eight multi-sponsors.
